Bourne 5 FAQ: Everything We Know So Far [Updated]

We’re less than a year out now from the release of the next Bourne film. We’ll be keeping track of everything we know about the upcoming installment here.

[UPDATE 12/21/2015]: We’ve added a new quote to “What will it be about?,” revealing how the movie will open, and where its big, final setpiece will take place.

What is the title of the movie?

The project is currently untitled.

It is worth noting though, that after using the three titles of the Robert Ludlum novels (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum), the fourth film (Legacy) took the title of the first Bourne book written by Eric Van Lustbader, who took over the series after Ludlum’s death in 2001.

It stands to reason then that there’s a pretty good possibility that the next film will likewise take a title from one of Lustbader’s novels. The Bourne Betrayal is the next in line; although The Bourne Ascendancy seems like a particularly cool one, and is fitting considering there’s a fair chance that Bourne 5 will be the final film in the main series.

Will it be Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne or Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross?

Bourne 5 will return the series to Jason Bourne.

UPDATE [9/10]: Here’s what Bourne will look like:

Bourne 5 Jason Bourne

So what happened to Aaron Cross?

According to Universal, Cross will be back, just not in this film.

What will it be about?

On that note, we don’t know much yet. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Matt Damon did drop some hints:

Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy… We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy. And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of…

Damon trails off there, so you’ll just have to imagine what he thinks Las Vegas is an incarnation of.

UPDATE [9/25]: Damon dropped a few more hints over at NY Daily News:

[Bourne] has his memory back, but that doesn’t mean he knows everything. It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid. So we have to answer the questions, Where’s he been? What’s he doing? What gets him going again? So once we solved all that, then we had a movie.

UPDATE [12/21]: Damon revealed some of the big beats of the new story to Variety:

We [filmed] in Tenerife, which is supposed to be Athens. It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie. And then England, Berlin a little bit for about a week, and a little bit in D.C. Then we’re going to Vegas for the third act…Big car chase on the strip.

Where did we last see Jason Bourne?

We last saw Jason Bourne in Ultimatum (although Legacy takes place at roughly the same time, and references the events of that film). By the end of Ultimatum, Jason Bourne has exposed Operation Blackbriar to the public, and nearly everyone involved in that program is either dead or under arrest.

We’ve also seen the mystery of his past and involvement in Treadstone more or less cleared up, leaving the character in a pretty open place in terms of where the story could go.

Who else is in it?

Julia Stiles will return as Nicky Parsons, who appeared in all three entries of the original trilogy.

The film will also introduce Tommy Lee Jones as a member of the CIA, and Alicia Vikander in an unannounced role.

Finally, Viggo Mortenson is rumored to be in talks to play an assassin who is tracking down Jason Bourne.

UPDATE [9/1]: THR reports that Vincent Cassel has been cast as a mysterious figure known only as “The Asset,” the industry code for assassin. It’s very possible that Cassel has taken the role that Viggo Mortenson was rumored to be circling.

UPDATE [9/16]: THR also reports that Ato Essandoh has been cast in a mystery role.

Who’s directing?

Paul Greengrass will direct. He previously directed both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

When will the movie come out?

Bourne 5 is currently set for a July 29, 2016 release date.
