We’ve been hearing for a while now that Spider-Man will soon be joining the Avengers team. We have yet to see anything that strongly ties the character in to the Marvel Universe, until now anyway.
Umberto Gonzalez, of Latino Review, is spreading a rumor that the new standalone Spider-Man movie will be called Spider-Man: The New Avenger. However, he did say take this news “with a grain of salt.”
Why The New Avenger?
If you take a moment to consider why the title The New Avenger has been chosen, it makes sense. We’ve had so many Spider-Man movies — including different actors playing the role — that the average viewer might get confused to see him suddenly wall-slinging alongside the Avengers team.
It looks like Marvel wants to make things clear before he joins up. Before we even get to see the new superhero on screen, we know right up front that he is an Avenger by the movie title.
What Will the New Spider-Man Movie Be About?
Kevin Feige, head of the Marvel cinematic universe, has said in the past that the next Spider-Man reboot would not be an origin story. Instead, it’s going to focus on Peter Parker’s high-school years. It won’t star the recent Andrew Garfield either. Actors rumored to play as the next Peter Parker include Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Timothee Chalamet (Homeland), Tom Holland (The Impossible), and Liam James (The Way, Way Back).
There’s no word on the big bad for the film just yet. Personally, I hope they don’t do another iteration of the Goblin — Green or Hob. I’d really like to see Carnage or Venom portrayed in a more dark, mature way. Who would you like to see go up against Spider-Man in the next film?
The new movie is being produced by Sony, but it looks like Marvel has creative license to do as they wish with the film. This is good news, as they’ll need to do a bit of adjusting to fit Spider-Man into the larger scheme.
As for who’s going to write and direct The New Avenger, Drew Goddard is rumored to fill the role. He will also be directing the upcoming Sinister Six movie.
If nothing changes, the new Spider-Man is slated for release on July 27, 2017. If you’re paying attention to the entire Marvel timeline, that means it will launch a year before Avengers: Infinity War Part One.
From where I’m sitting, it looks like the two-part Infinity War is going to be a wild ride. I cannot wait.
