Jessica Jones Plot Synopsis Revealed, How Does It Differ from the Comics?

Jessica Jones will debut on Netflix — just like Daredevil — sometime this fall. Marvel has pretty much held back any information about the series, other than the primary cast. We know that Krysten Ritter — from Breaking Bad — will play Jessica Jones and David Tennant will play the Purple Man.

Thanks to Netflix, and an Amazon listing for the Season One box set, we now have a plot synopsis for the upcoming series. If you’re a fan of Jessica Jones’ character, who first appeared in 2001, you might notice there have been some changes most likely to better adapt the plot for an episodic format.

Netflix lists the following:

Working as a private investigator in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, a troubled ex-superhero’s past comes back to haunt her in the live-action series, “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones.”

The Amazon synopsis, on the other hand, is much more revealing.

Ever since her short-lived stint as a Super Hero ended in tragedy, Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic, badass private detective in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by self-loathing, and a wicked case of PTSD, Jessica battles demons from within and without, using her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need… especially if they’re willing to cut her a check.

As an aside, that listing also includes information about the extra material that will come bundled in the Season One box set.

In this new collectible volume, go behind the scenes into the world that brings the story of Jessica Jones to life. Packed with stunning production photography, as well as exclusive interviews, this deluxe companion reveals the details of the set and script of Marvel’s AKA Jessica Jones through the eyes of its makers.

How Does the Synopsis Differ from the Comics?

The PTSD angle is much different from the comics, which saw Jessica Jones become a puppet of Purple Man (Zebediah Killgrave) through mind control. He seizes her mind and body and then forces her to attack the Avengers. She visits the Avengers mansion and attacks the first member she encounters, Scarlet Witch. The Vision — Scarlett’s husband — and Iron man attack Jones’ and naturally this ends up with her in a coma. During that time S.H.I.E.L.D. and Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) take care of her, nursing her back to full health.

It’s unclear yet, whether or not Captain Marvel will play a role in the upcoming series. However, since Jessica Jones takes place in Hell’s Kitchen, it’s not ridiculous to assume she will encounter Daredevil (Matt Murdock) and may even work with him here and there.

In the books Jones’ has super strength, near invulnerability and she can even fly. We may see these powers neglected — or their power lessened — to account for her double life. Not to mention, that skillset allows her to be much more powerful than Daredevil.

In Jones’ later years she operates as a private investigator working with other superhumans in need of help. A relationship with Luke Cage (Mike Colter) prompts her to abandon her superhero duties — trading her superpowers in for her keen detective skills.

As for her origin, Jones’ acquires her powers when a truck carrying radioactive chemicals collides with her family’s vehicle during a trip to Disneyland. Her father actually works for Tony Stark, who gives him the tickets to take his family to the theme park. Jones’ family is killed in the accident, and she enters a coma. Eventually, she is woken by Galactus, who looms around outside her hospital room. That’s when she realizes she has special abilities.

It’s safe to assume we’ll witness the birth of Jones’ powers on screen, though Marvel may change a few things considering the radioactive chemical and truck bit is pretty much what happened to Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.

  1. Could they have her injured in the same truck as Matt Murdock or is that too much of a departure?

    1. Or they could just make her be an Inhuman. Since Marvel is going in that direction, it wouldn’t be too weird, I guess…
