Star Wars: Episode VIII Rumors – Lando’s Return and a New Female Sith?

With all the commotion today with rumors about an Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy and a Han Solo/Boba Fett Anthology film as the follow up to 2016’s Rogue One, it’s easy to forget that we have Episode VIII coming just a mere two years from now. As such, the movie is almost certainly in development with Rian Johnson going full steam ahead. It being 2015, it’s only natural that some info might have found its way onto the internet.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII AHEAD*

What’s the deal with Episode VIII?

Well, we won’t get into any of the big spoilers that may be floating around (they’re easy enough to find), just general stuff. First, it seems that fan favorite and Force Awakens absentee Lando Calrissian may be making his return according to a report from Making Star Wars.

Hooray for Lando! What will he be up to?

It seems Lando will be there in a leadership position in regards to a “fleet,” which is most likely pertaining to Resistance forces.

So, he won’t be a capitalist?

It’s probably safe to say Lando will always be a capitalist at heart in some capacity. It’s possible he left a business venture to take up the mantle of General he left behind after the Battle of Endor. It’s could also be the case that the fleet he’ll be commanding is full of mercenaries or ships he’s picked up from business deals. We won’t know more until the film gets farther along in development.

What about this Female Sith?

Information on that front is very vague at the moment. It seems that “licenses are being promised” for a character described as a “Female Sith.” Whether it’s an official Sith carrying on the line of Darth Sidious and Darth Vader, or whether she’s a Dark Jedi with a mean streak and a red lightsaber remains to be seen.

Could the female Sith be Lumiya from the Expanded Universe?

Lumiya

It could be inspired by her, but it’s very doubtful they would bring her in after going through great lengths to distance the new continuity from the old one in this time period.

But what about Kylo Ren? Isn’t he a Sith?

Well, he’s certainly the bad guy in The Force Awakens, but he hasn’t been called a Sith yet. At this point as far as we know, the Sith and the Jedi are all pretty much dead with the exception of Luke Skywalker. Therefore, it makes more sense that Kylo Ren is someone who wants to be a Sith, which explains his less than polished lightsaber construction techniques which seem to have lead to a very unstable looking blade.

Does a new bad guy in Episode VIII mean Kylo Ren will die in The Force Awakens?

First of all, this is all rumor and speculation at this point. Second, it seems like a big mistake to kill Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, especially after the fan reaction to Darth Maul’s death in The Phantom Menace. One of the biggest universal disappointments of the Prequel Trilogy is the lack of a visible villain figure a la Darth Vader in the original films. Darth Maul is often seen as having been killed prematurely… a decision fixed with his return in the Clone Wars show. Since the current Star Wars team is basing the new trilogy off the original films, it’s safe to say Kylo Ren will probably be around for a while.
