Transformers 5 and Transformers Cinematic Universe Confirmed by Hasbro

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner confirmed that Transformers 5 might be on the way during the company’s 2015 Q1 earnings conference call. He also revealed plans for the Transformers Cinematic Universe, which means that soon we’ll see sequels and spinoffs similar to what Marvel is doing with their films.

What Did Hasbro Reveal?

“Our plan with the studio and filmakers you may have heard some writers being hired and we have in fact brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around Transformers. We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie [TF4] to happen in 2017.”

Of course, this is not the first time we’re hearing this news. The idea of an expanded Transformers universe first began to crop up when Paramount Pictures signed-on Akiva Goldsman to create a “writer’s room” for the studio. Also attached to the project are director Michael Bay, executive producer Steven Spielberg and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. We know that Mark Wahlberg will star in future Transformers movies, though it’s not clear just yet how many he signed-on for.

For all intents and purposes, Transformers: Age of Extinction was a big hit. It grossed about $1.1 billion and generated a total of $250 million in net profits. It’s no wonder they’re keen on having Wahlberg return.

The real question is, what are they going to do with the story? It seemed like the Transformers franchise was getting a bit tired there. Don’t get me wrong I love Transformers both as a creative series and a brand, I just hope they’ll be able to come up with something more interesting for these spinoffs they have planned.

Are you excited to see what happens with the Transformers universe?
