Daredevil is perched on a roof, listening to the sounds of the city. He hears music, laughing, and screaming. After he hears gunshots, he springs into action. Three masked men have just committed a robbery. Two police officers are chasing them on foot. One of the officers is shot as the other one tackles one of the robbers. The robber attacks the police officer and is about to shoot. Suddenly, someone grabs the robber and beats him unconscious. The police officer never saw who saved his life. One by one, Daredevil chases down the other robbers and subdues them. The last robber takes a young girl hostage inside a church. Daredevil enters the church, ready to fight for her life. The cops show up later to find the woman alive and the robber knocked out.
Foggy and Matt are on their way to work. Foggy seems cheerful as he describes his date. Things quickly go serious as Foggy notices Matt is bleeding. Foggy tells Matt Karen is noticing too. It’s getting more difficult to keep the secret that Matt is Daredevil. Once they arrive at the office, clients are waiting. Karen is optimistic they can help every one of them. She is worried that they’re broke. Although they have no money for their bills, Matt assures her everything will be okay.
An Irish mobster, Nesbitt, is having a talk with his men. He wants to retake Hell’s Kitchen. Now that Fisk is gone, the city can be theirs again. The meeting is cut short when gunfire erupts. The mobsters try to fight back but are cut down one by one. One of the survivors, Grotto, manages to find Matt, Foggy and Karen. He tells them it wasn’t an attack by a rival group, it was an army. Grotto wants Nelson & Murdock to help him get out of the city. If they help him, he’ll give the police any information they want. He then passes out from a gunshot wound he suffered during the attack. Karen stays with Grotto at the hospital while Matt and Foggy try and get answers.
Matt and Foggy go to the crime scene Grotto mentioned earlier. A friend and police officer, Brett, is able to give them some useful information. According to the DA, this wasn’t the first attack against criminals. Someone with heavy firepower and military training is hitting Hell’s Kitchen hard. Whoever this army is, they’re targeting criminals all over the city. Brett warns that things will only get worse.
Foggy goes to see a lead, a biker named Smitty. It’s a dead end. Smitty was killed along with four of his crew. Same MO as the Irish mob, heavy firepower with tactical precision. Matt goes to meet Turk. Turk heard some things about how every criminal gang and group is going after Fisk’s leftovers. Matt asks how someone got their hands on heavy firepower. Turk swears he doesn’t know and gives Matt a hint that some heavy weaponry is coming into the US courtesy of a drug cartel. It’s being stored in a warehouse in the Meat District. After arriving at the warehouse, Matt notices the weapons are gone. There’s bodies left on meat hooks. Each man was brutally killed. A survivor tells Matt that one man attacked them.
The same man is going to the hospital to finish off Grotto. He pulls out a shotgun and opens fire. As people scream and flee, Karen helps Grotto escape. She drives away in her car, trying to escape the carnage. The gunman has followed them using the rooftops and is about to shoot Grotto with a sniper rifle, when Daredevil appears. The fight between the two is brutal. Each figther is skilled. Daredevil is about to get the upperhand when the gunman pulls out a gun and shoots Daredevil. He falls off the roof.
Matt: If I take a night off, people get hurt.
Brett: Hell’s Kitchen is about to explode.
Daredevil: Who did this?
Man: No one escapes this. No one can get away.
Daredevil: Tell me, tell me who they are.
Man: No ‘they.’ Him. It’s one man.
This episode didn’t quite have what I was hoping for. It was an amazing episode but I was hoping to see more of The Punisher. We did see some of him. This episode portrayed The Punisher almost like a ghost. We only see a few glimpses of him. There was one hell of a fight between him and Daredevil. I’m sure we’ll see more of The Punisher as the season goes on.
There was mention of Fisk. I wonder if he’ll appear again during this season. Vincent D’Onofrio did such a great performance, it’d be a shame to have him for just one season. I wonder who’ll be the villain this season. I’ve heard Electra makes an appearance. Between her and The Punisher, this should be an interesting season. It’s noteworthy that Steven S. DeKnight has left as the series’ show runner, and is replaced by Doug Petire and Marco Ramirez. So far the show has the same dark tone and intense action. I think the show is in good hands.
