Marvel Snuck a Star Wars Easter Egg Into Every Phase Two Movie

Losing limbs is a bit of a trope in Star Wars, and it happens in practically every movie in the saga. There’s the cantina on Tatooine, Luke Skywalker on Cloud City, Mace Windu, Anakin (and again as Darth Vader), Dooku, the point is, people lose a ton of hands in that universe.

That’s no secret though, what is crazy is that Marvel used this as inspiration for an “easter egg” that appears in every single Phase Two film.

Marvel head Kevin Feige explains:

So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.

Sound too crazy to be true? Let’s review:

Iron Man 3

Tony Stark cuts off Aldrich Killian’s hand.

Thor: The Dark World

Loki cuts off Thor’s hand (but just kidding).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Bucky loses his arm after falling from the train in the first movie (we see a bloody stump). We then see it surgically removed, and replaced by a metal arm.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Gamora hacks off both of Groot’s arms on Xandar. Don’t worry, he’s fine.

So, as long as both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man have someone losing an arm, Kevin Feige just revealed what’s arguably the weirdest Marvel easter egg to date. That, or he just really likes seeing arms cut off.
