EVE: Valkyrie is Going to Look Amazing in Virtual Reality, Oculus and Morpheus Both Confirmed

Earlier today at Fanfest 2015, CCP Games announced that EVE: Valkyrie was about to head into pre-alpha testing.

It’s invite only, so for the majority of us who won’t be getting our hands on it just yet, we do have a consolation prize in the form of this glorious gameplay trailer. Man, is this game going to look sick in VR.

What’s this about virtual reality?

In addition to the slick new trailer, CCP Games also confirmed that EVE: Valkyrie will be a launch title for both the Oculus Rift and the PlayStation 4’s Project Morpheus. That makes sense, as Valkyrie is being designed from the ground up as a VR experience, and will be one of the first major games to feature VR integration as a core feature instead of just an option.

For obvious reasons, they could not reveal which version of the game will come out first, as neither device has a firm launch date. For what it’s worth, Morpheus is looking at a tentative 2016 release window, while the Oculus Rift team has previously stated that 2015 is somewhat likely for their headset.

What about the Vive?

Sadly, there was no word on Valve/HTC’s Vive headset. It seems that the Oculus was CCP’s device of choice for the PC version of the game.

That’s surprising to me, since the Vive will most likely be the first one to hit stores, with a 2015 release date already set.

Will there be crossplay between the different versions?

There will not be unfortunately. At least for now, the PC and PS4 versions of the game will be separate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes in the future though, with the ever-present rumors that CCP hopes to expand Valkyrie, and the previously released PlayStation shooter Dust 514, to include more integration with EVE Online.

What is Valkyrie anyways?

EVE: Valkyrie is an upcoming multiplayer space combat sim that puts players in the cockpit of a starfighter. It uses the same setting as EVE Online, but at least for now, it will be a seperate experience.

Also, it will star Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff, so that’s pretty cool.
