Calling all Bronys and Pegasisters! What we have been anticipating for months now has finally come. Season 5 has started on Discovery Family last Saturday morning. I will do my best to keep you updated to the events in our beloved Equestria with commentary.
I will also try to minimize the spoilers.
For My Little Pony this was a interesting choice to kick off the season but did hit a very real issue many of us are confronted with.
The castle the mane six obtained at the end of the last season shows a magic map to our heros. On this map their cutiemarks appear on a spot on what seems to be the outskirts of equestria. The friends minus Spike travel to this spot to discover a bland small town, where all the ponies have very fake over exaggerated smiles and strangest of all all of the residents have just have a gray “equal” sign as their cutiemark. The town feels differences are dangerous and create conflict. They feel in order to be friends everyone needs to be exactly the same.
It turns out the ponys of this town gave up their own cutiemarks and talents in order to keep to their leaders philosophy. The leader tells the visitors that it is their choice if they want to join or not. but the second she knows someone in her little utopia isn’t happy with how things are she steals the cutie marks from the mane six and tries to brain wash them. Once, they loose their marks they loose their talents and other things that make them unique. Watch the episode for the conclusion.
This is definitely a split from most Friendship is Magic season kick offs and wrap ups. Starlight Glimmer is clearly the villain here in a dictator kind of way. Most season starts are fun fantasy things that couldn’t happen in real life such as the sun never rising or cotton candy clouds making chocolate rain. But as sad as it is there is alot of reality in this episode but personally i think something like this needed to be made and the lore of Eqestria had the means to do so better than most.
The real world issue it copies is something that almost all adults and children face. These days, the pressure is on everyone to agree in beliefs and politics or face being ostracized in one form or another. This episode shows to take pride in differences that being the same as others isn’t what it seems to be.
“Variety is the Spice of Life” Few things today show this better than Friendship is Magic. On the surface there’s almost nothing all of the mane six have in common. Each have a different talent, grew up a little different, have different quirks in their personalities, different strengths and weaknesses. But they all needed each other to get through the trials they faced. none of them could have succeed on their own. Reality is the equality as the town shows isn’t necessarily a good thing. Though i think the topic could have been taken further but then it wouldn’t really be a kid show anymore. as in cutting off pegasi wings and unicorn horns after all this caused conflict in the three tribes in Eqestria’s foundation. I admit i am curious to know how Starlight would have responded if Zecora had entered her town.
