We all have our fandoms. There are shows, video games, a certain kind of movie that catches our attention. There’s something about a particular show or movie that we feel a connection with. We shouldn’t feel ashamed. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying something that brings joy into your life. There are many fandoms to choose from. If you’re into Sci-Fi, you can choose from Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, just to name a few. If you’re into the realm of fantasy you have your pick of Lord of The Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic and many more. If you’re a jock you can choose from hockey, football, boxing, soccer, mixed martial arts. You can join any number of them. There’s no rule as to how many you can join.
I’m a member of many fandoms. I’m a Jedi, Browncoat, Whovian, comic book and video game nerd. The first fandom I became involved with was Star Wars. I was young when I saw Star Wars for the first time. I was amazed by lightsabers, X-Wing fighters, Ewoks, the power that both the Jedi and Sith used.
Star Wars…my first fandom
Later, I would become obsessed with every show Joss Whedon created. Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I was in high school when Buffy debuted on the WB TV channel. In high school, you had to be careful to what you admitted to liking. If you liked the wrong show, movie, person or sports team, you would be shunned. But there was something about this show that clicked with me. The show was funny, scary, exciting and sad. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Anthony Stewart Head, James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter all became my favorite actors and characters on the show.
Firefly..I’m a Browncoat and damn proud of it!!
I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say ‘Thank you Joss for creating so many amazing fandoms!’
A lot of people out there might be scared to admit what fandoms they like. There’s no reason to be scared. You could actually make friends that way. You never know who out there likes the same shows or movies you do. There’s no such thing as a ‘wrong fandom.’ You should embrace whatever you enjoy. The longer you enjoy your fandom, the happier you’ll be. By all means, leave a comment and let me and everyone else know what’s your favorite fandom. Don’t be afraid.
What are some of your fandoms?
