Choosing Sides (2013): Written by Yael Green and Directed by Lee Loechler.
Starring: Timothy J. Cox (Peter), Rachel Lynn Jackson (Ellen) and Max Abe Plush (Mikey)
***1/2 out of ****
The things some parents will do to bring their child over to their way of thinking, or in the case of the wonderful comic short Choosing Sides, to their faith.
A typical family dinner turns into a Holy War as young parents Peter (Timothy J. Cox), a Catholic and Ellen (Rachel Lynn Jackson), Jewish, make their cases for their religion, rather bluntly to their son Mikey (Max Abe Plush), who is on the fence. Very quickly, father and mother turn on each other and proceed to throw zinger after zinger at the other’s religion, compliments of a very funny script by Yael Green and the dead solid perfect performances of Cox and Jackson, who play perfectly off each other, even when hurling insults at one another.
(Max Abe Plush stars in Choosing Sides)
Director Lee Loechler delivers it all with a rapid fire pace, with a pay off in the end that had me howling.
A real hoot!
