Warning: Full Flash TV & Comic Spoilers
The Flash’s first season only has two episodes remaining and its latest episode Rogue Air gave us more potential clues as to what’s in store for the future.
Leonard Snart, aka Captain Cold, dropped this line which is sure to get a rise out of fans
“[…]Something tells me they’ll be a lot more use to me as part of my rogues than rotting away as part of the North China Sea”
The seeds have officially been planted for the appearance of The Rogues
Who are the Rogues?
As teased by the events of Rogue Air, the Rogues are a group of supervillains mainly to the Flash. Their comic origins begin similarly to their TV counterparts in that they both originally banded together after being broken out of jail (although Gorilla Grodd had broken them out instead of Captain Cold). After forming the Rogues a member was usually never seen without the presence of another member, in large to the fact that the Flash is too powerful for only one of them to overcome.
One thing that sets the Rogues apart from many of the other villains of the DC universe is their code of conduct. They do not kill anyone unless it is absolutely necessary (as was alluded to in the previous flash episode Going Rogue when Snart shot a henchman who killing a guard). They do not do non-prescription drugs. They are only to make their crimes about the payout. These rules were instated and enforced by their leader, Captain Cold. These rules are the root of a lot of in fighting in the group.
In their Silver Age incarnation their members were Captain Cold, Mirror Master, The Pied Piper, Weather Wizard, The Trickster, Captain Boomerang, The Top,Abra Kadabra, Heat Wave, and Golden Glider. Only three of the aforementioned members were present in “Rogue Air” however seven members have appeared on the show.
It is most likely too late in the season to have another appearance from the Rogues as the show needs to settle its main season one story arc with the Reverse Flash. Although with the Rogues pretty much confirmed we can speculate on a few directions the writers may go.
Lisa Snart, aka Golden Glider, was officially given her nickname from Cisco last night. In the comic book world she is killed by one of her henchmen, nicknamed Chillbaine. This becomes a source of a lot of grief for her older brother. There have been no hints of this storyline happening thus far but seeing how impactful this has been on Captain Cold in the comic books its something the writers may want to consider as a way to develop the Captain Cold character and prevent him from becoming stale.
Absent from the group last night were the members Pied Piper, The Trickster, Heat Wave, and Captain Boomerang. While the Pied Piper and Heat Wave are free in the television universe, the Trickster and Captain Boomerang are imprisoned. Breaking these character out would be a nod to the comics and the writers would be fools to not bring back Trickster after the performance Mark Hamill gave. Notably, Captain Boomerang is imprisoned in Lian Yu so that could set up the premise for the next Arrow/Flash crossover.
The aforementioned rules of the Rogues are huge to their lore. The rules had been explored briefly towards the end of the episode Rogue Time with the members Captain Cold, Golden Glider, and Heat Wave. It’d be interesting to see if the other Rogues decide to fall under these rules and what potential story lines can arise from this element.
With the appearance of the Rogues all but expected we can only wait until season 2 to see.
