Warning: Full Spoilers Ahead
With the cliffhanger we were left with from last month’s issue the possibilities were endless. Did someone set Negan free? Will he wreak havoc on Alexandria? Will he take back leadership from the Saviors? Will he decide to settle the score with Rick? Most importantly, what will Negan do next?
He did nothing.
The answer to all those questions was nothing. And although that might seem like a letdown, the dialogue that happened between Rick and Negan was anything but. Their discussion took up more than half of the issue but their verbal showdown was one of most poignant moments post All Out War.
Ever since the beginning of the new arc Rick has been gradually getting more and more unlikeable. Why? The easy answer was to say that he was becoming the next Negan. That the leadership had taken a toll on him and he no longer had compassion in his heart for others. Generally these points may be true but putting him face to face with Negan brought it all out in the open. No one else could possibly understand the hardships of leading a large group of people and the lengths they have to go to in order to survive in their world. Negan really stole the show here as he basically picked Rick apart. Like him or not, I felt his monologue was true at its core and exposed Rick’s weaknesses. And another great thing was that he got to give us some vintage Negan quotables (“Did I bring out my perfectly normal-sized wiener and fuck orgasms into your girl Andrea until she ordered a T-shirt from the Negan’s Cock Fan Club?”)
How Rick acted in the next panels was very telling of his character. Negan had pretty much spelled out what Rick was going to do before he had actually did it. He scolded Olivia very harshly for her mistake. When being pressed by Andrea as to why Negan is still alive he argued that it was of utmost importance that they remained civilized. That being civilized is what works and what will set them apart from the others, like Negan, that came before them. All the while…
The juxtaposition from Rick talking up civilization to seeing Gregory’s corpse hanging from a tree surrounded by his executioners was bone chilling.
Standout Panel: Gregory hanging in front of an audience (I literally dropped my jaw when I turned the page)
The writers really did the smartest thing they could do with Negan by letting him stay in that cell. He’s a perfect contrast to Rick’s transformation and is still one of the most interesting characters despite not being a physical threat to the group (at least not yet).
What to look for next?
Rick is eventually going to learn that Maggie hung Gregory. He’s also going to learn that Carl skipped town to go be with the Whisperers. Needless to say Rick is going to be pissed. Maggie is one of the only ones with enough clout to stand up to Rick so their inevitable confrontation will be a point to look for.
