Gears of War is back for the fourth installment in the series — that is if you don’t include Judgement, anyway. Microsoft revealed the game during their E3 conference with a spectacular trailer.
If you weren’t around to watch Microsoft’s press conference, here’s the Gears 4 trailer:
What’s the Deal With Gears 4?
Gears 4 is being developed by The Coalition — previously known as Black Tusk Studios — having taken over for Epic Games back in 2014 after Microsoft acquired the rights to the franchise.
Also, even though the trailer lists the name as Gears 4 it will actually be called Gears of War 4.
Two unnamed protagonists — one is a male named JD and the other is a female named Kait — take center stage this time around. In the gameplay demo, we see them making their way through a gothic-like fortress or base. At the end of the trailer, they’re attacked by strange creatures, which look nothing like the locust we’ve come to know in the previous Gears games. There’s also a horror undertone to the game, which seems to be taking the series back to its roots.
What does look similar is the gameplay. We can expect to see a return of the cover-based combat and the iconic Gears Lancer assault rifle — chainsaw bayonet included.
Gears 4 isn’t set to drop until 2016, so we might not know much about the game for some time.
If you’re jonesin’ to get your hands on a Gears game soon, don’t worry. Gears of War Ultimate Edition — a completely remastered version of the first game — launches on August 25. It will bring along full 1080p HD support and a solid 60fps framerate. If you’re lucky, you can jump into the beta which is available on Xbox Live right now.
