The hospital is in chaos. The police are trying to find out who this gunman is and what does he want. Foggy is trying to find Matt. No one has seen him or heard from him last night. Foggy overhears some audio from a police radio. Shots were fired from a rooftop. He goes from apartment to apartment, trying to find Matt. Foggy finally finds Matt, badly hurt.
Foggy is able to get Matt back to the apartment. Matt gives Foggy information about the shooter. He’s fast and he’s been trained to fight. Matt wants to catch the guy. He knows that if the police try and catch him, the shooter will not go quietly. Foggy suggests Matt stay home so he and Karen can take care of Grotto.
Karen is taking down Grotto’s information. Foggy shows up and questions Grotto. Foggy wants to know why Grotto didn’t tell them it was just one guy. Grotto swears he didn’t know. He just thought it was rumors. Brett comes in and gives Grotto some clothes to change into. The DA is on the way so they have to wait for now. Foggy and Karen step outside with Brett. Brett gives some information about this new vigilante. He’s ‘independent’ as in he’s acting alone. He’s targeting different criminal groups. Unlike Daredevil, he has no problems killing people. Some cops are cheering for the guy, others are scared.
The DA of New York, Samantha Reyes (Michelle Hurd) and her partner, Tower (Stephen Rider) have arrived to talk to Grotto. Foggy steps in to make sure Grotto gets a fair deal. Reyes doubts Grotto has any useful information. She wants Grotto to wear a wire and meet a man, Brass. Grotto knows Brass is a dangerous man and refuses to meet him wired. Reyes reminds Grotto that this new vigilante doesn’t leave anything unfinished. If this vigilante wants you dead, he’ll keep coming after you. Tower also reveals that the DA’s office is working on a profile of the shooter. They even have a nickname, ‘The Punisher.’ (Jon Berenthal)
Karen goes to visit Matt. She’s worried about him. Matt tries to play off his injuries. Karen doesn’t quite know the truth yet. Matt changes the subject to Grotto and why Reyes showed up personally to question him. Karen ponders with Matt how The Punisher came to become a vigilante. She can’t help but wonder if The Punisher was inspired by Daredevil. The citizens cheer when Daredevil fights criminals. It’s possible others, although more violent, could be inspired by Daredevil to fight crime. Karen leaves and lets Matt she and Foggy both care about him.
Matt heads back to the bar to see if there’s any clues he missed. He finds a blood trail and follows it to an apartment. Inside is surveillance equipment, weapons and ammunition. Matt begins to suspect The Punisher is living here. He overhears some radio chatter from Reyes about sending in Grotto. Matt decides to head that way to investigate.
Foggy and Karen meet with Grotto to make sure he’s ready for the sting operation. Grotto’s nervous but both Karen and Foggy assure him everything will be okay. DA Reyes is there too. Foggy and Karen don’t trust her. Those thoughts are good because Reyes set up Grotto to lure The Punisher out of hiding. The police appear ready to apprehend The Punisher when he shows up. Both The Punisher and Daredevil make an appearance. Daredevil fights off The Punisher as the police open fire on both men. During the fight, both men fall through a skylight. The police rush to apprehend them. By the time they get there, it’s too late. The Punisher and Daredevil are both gone.
Karen: There’s something about this city that makes good people want to shoot their way out of bad situations.
Matt: Blood is being shed, Foggy.
Foggy: And you’re donated more than your fair share to the cause.
Karen: None of this feels real, I guess.
Foggy: That asshole opened fire in a hospital. You’re not the one that deserves to be punished. And plus, you got away, which makes you kind of awesome.
As the season continues, we learn more about the new characters. DA Reyes is very sketchy. She ordered the police to shoot The Punisher. Shouldn’t she try and arrest him instead? I think she’s hiding something. I don’t much about her and I already don’t trust her. We also learn that The Punisher has zero tolerance for criminals. There was a scene in which a pawn shop owner hinted at selling child pornography. The Punisher didn’t hesitate to kill him.
Daredevil and The Punisher have gone head to head twice now. Although they don’t know it yet, they both want the same thing: The innocent to be protected. The Punisher has no problems killing the criminals. Daredevil wants to stop criminals, but refuses to kill them. Readers, whose side are you on? Which of these characters do you agree with?
