It doesn’t seem like a stretch to say that Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II will arguably be the most ambitious movie project of all time.
When the first half hits theaters in 2018, it will have been the culmination of 10 years of storytelling, stretching across 18 movies, eight or nine TV series, and dozens of comics and short films.
The Russo brothers are currently working on the screenplay for this monumental story, and recently dropped this little nugget:
“We have so many characters we’re dealing with. We’re breaking ground on Avengers: Infinity War. We have a board with 67 characters on it,” they revealed at Wizard World New Orleans.
That is a… lot of characters (and should make for some interesting poster designs). That got me thinking though, just who are these characters? Do we even have 67 people in the MCU worth caring about?
So, I tallied ’em up, and here’s what I got. To preface this, I only included characters who are still alive as of Ant-Man. Obviously this number could go down significantly after Civil War, and we can’t rule out the possibility that reports of some deaths have been greatly exaggerated. That being said, here’s how the tally broke down for me.
We have:
- 9 Avengers, plus 9 more hero-level characters like Nick Fury, War Machine, Black Panther, and Wasp.
- 5 Guardians of the Galaxy
- 6 or so major Asgardians (including Loki)
- Plus Thanos
So that puts us at around 30. To get anywhere near that 67, we’re going to need to factor in a few more surviving villains (8), and some of the bigger side characters, like Erik Selvig and Pepper Potts (12). Then on top of that we can add other “cosmic” side characters introduced in Guardians (6).
That brings us to 57. If we throw in Captain Marvel, The Inhumans, and potentially some new characters in Infinity War, 67 doesn’t seem that unreasonable.
However, that’s without touching the TV aspect of the MCU. While I know the movie and TV sides of the MCU have been struggling to play nice, I’d personally be really let down if characters like Daredevil and Jessica Jones didn’t get to show up, at least for a brief cameo. And Infinity War without Coulson? I can hardly imagine it.
All told by my tally, mining the TV roster gives us Coulson plus another 12 major SHIELD members, four more superheroes, and 20 or so supporting characters.
So yeah, looking at the character pool the Russo’s have to draw from, 67 honestly doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch. Now, making the movie work while managing to fit everyone in? That’s an entirely different story.
If you’re curious, here was my final list while making the count:

Most of these characters will barely feature. The Guardians of the Galaxy have only a glorified cameo in Avengers 3 to provide the link up with their plot lines for example (I’m saying them because they are the only characters we have any sort of confirmation about, other than the core Avengers).
