At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Tom Rothman announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be responsible for an animated Spider-Man movie. Lord and Miller were previously involved in The Lego Movie, the Jump Street reboot series, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Last Man on Earth and more.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are behind the animated Spider-Man, but we don’t know yet if they will actually be directing it. We do know they’ll be writing and producing.
Other producers for the film include Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal.
What Will the Animated Spider-Man Movie Be About?
The animated Spider-Man won’t hit theaters until July 20, 2018, so we have a while to wait. Keep in mind, Lord and Miller’s version will be released alongside Marvel’s next live-action entry. Rothman says the two will “co-exist.”
The press release does state:
“The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.”
It looks like the two versions will remain largely unrelated, other than featuring our beloved web-slinging superhero front and center. Of course, that will depend on how Lord and Miller handle the plot and whether or not it ties into the Marvel universe.
Will It Be Any Good?
Tom Rothman believes the movie is going to be “fucking awesome,” which is what he proclaimed on stage at the event.
Lord and Miller do have an uncanny way of turning nothing into something. I mean, look at some of the movies and series they’ve handled. Like it or not, they did a pretty good job with The Lego Movie.
Let’s hope they do just as well with a Spider-Man film. Then again I don’t see why they wouldn’t, this is one of the first projects they’ve had that doesn’t sound like shit right from the getgo. No I’m not implying their movies are shit, I’m just saying they all seemed like bad ideas before the movie was actually done.
