Full Spoilers Ahead
This installment of The Walking Dead continues to open up and explore the world two years past the war against Negan and the Saviors. Big decisions, big reveals, and a gripping cliffhanger. Lets talk about it.
The Michonne and Rick dynamic is very interesting at this point. From the beginning of the flash forward from “All Out War”, Rick’s role had graduated from being the warrior leader of the group to becoming the wise old sage. While he has mostly been kind in his interactions, many characters have shown fear in making him angry. This was most evident in the last issue when old friends like Ezekiel and the returning Michonne showed fear in accidentally offending Rick with their jokes. There’s a lot more to be explored in that evolution of Rick’s character and whether he just became a a grumpy old man or if it’s a more serious change. Nevertheless it was good to see Rick call Michonne his best friend and show genuine care about her mental wellbeing. It seems like a sure thing Michonne will show up at the fair with her coming back after such a long absence but with Robert Kirkman behind the helm you never know what may happen.
Come on Gregory. Stop lying.
I’m really liking the new Jesus. We all knew Jesus was a badass fighting machine but he always came off as a very compassionate person. That’s all gone. And while Maggie is struggling with the decision to kill Gregory I love how Jesus is just in her ear like the bad conscience saying “Come on…do it…you know you want to.” After the panels with Claudette confessing her involvement in the attempted murder Maggie decided Gregory needed to die and I’m really glad they didn’t stretch out this decision over another issue.
While we all hate Negan it was nice to see him looking back to form. With the disheveled look he sported in issues past, he seemed to have lost his identity as a threat. Give him a wash and haircut and voila! He looks viable to be a worthy adversary again. I did like the decision to keep him alive and I felt it tied very organically to the story and left open a possibility of his escape. However I do felt the ending was kind of cheap. They’ve successfully kept him locked up for two years and just one day the door is left open? I don’t buy it and I’m sure theres more to that than meets the eye.
Few developments for Carl and the Whisperers although we were treated with some great dialogue from Alpha before the reveal of the Whisperer’s camp. Which by the way is HUGE! This group is now looking like a threat worthy of Rick and company.
Standout Panel: The Whisperer’s camp
This issue picked up the pace for a lot of big stories to be unraveled in coming issues. With two threats looming over our heroes the story is finally picking up and heading to the conflict we’ve all been awaiting.
