Harry Potter fans are in for a real treat! On top of the spinoff movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — starring Eddie Redmayne — that’s dropping in 2016, a new Harry Potter themed play will also debut in London’s West End.
The play is called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and it’s based on an original, yet entirely new story created by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. Music for the play will be produced by British artist Imogen Heap.
The series’ creator J.K. Rowling took to Twitter to announce the play to fans, on the 18th anniversary of the first book’s publication — Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (at the time called The Sorcerer’s Stone).
Although the official site already mentions this, J.K. Rowling confirmed herself that the play will follow a new story in the Harry Potter universe.
Rowling also addressed fans wondering why she didn’t adapt the story into another book. She said that she’s confident “when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story.” My guess is that perhaps there are some musical elements to it, which is exactly why Imogen Heap is attached to the project.
What Will the Play Be About?
As for what it’s about, without a synopsis and casting information all we can do is speculate at this point. I’d say that the title can be construed as an important detail. The way I see it, the term “cursed child” could mean one of two things. Either the story is about one of Harry Potter’s children — or the child of another character from the Harry Potter universe like Ron and Hermoine or Neville Longbottom. Or, the story is about Voldemort when he was much younger.
Of course, I could be way off and it could end up being neither of those things but for now I’m going to hold out hope.
What do you think Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is going to be about?
