Director Neill Blomkamp confirmed on his Instagram account today that he will be making a new Alien movie.
Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox has placed Neill Blomkamp in the role of director for a new movie based on Alien.
What is he known for?
His best film, in my opinion, is District 9, but he also directed Elysium and the upcoming Chappie. He’s also been a part of visual effects and design on other projects, but he’s most known for his directorial work.
Is this going to be Prometheus 2?
No. Ridley Scott is still taking the helm for the sequel to Prometheus, and apparently Blomkamp’s film will take place long after that sequel takes place.
Will he be a good fit for the franchise?
I’ve always thought of Alien as a universe that different people see different parts of, then make films based on their own perception of what makes a good story in that universe. Alien and Aliens are both masterpieces in their own right, but their cinematic styles couldn’t be more different.
Blomkamp has a solid record with sci-fi films, and I believe he can bring a new perspective to the franchise that will be worth checking out.
Who’s going to be starring in it?
No word on if Ripley/Weaver is even in this movie, but I’m holding on to whatever hope I have that she’ll be in it, because let’s face it, she rocks.
When will it come out?
No idea. The movie was just confirmed, so I’d estimate a few years from now. You can check out the photo Blomkamp posted to his Instagram account below.
