Companion Ghostbusters Movie In The Works To Complement 2016 Reboot

It’s an exciting time for Ghostbusters fans. Audiences will not only be treated to 2016’s all-female reboot, directed by Paul Feig, but also to a companion action-comedy film featuring Channing Tatum.
It’s a breath of fresh air for fans of the franchise, who waited years for Bill Murray, star of the original 1984 Ghostbusters film, to read over and approve a script for Ghostbusters 3, an endeavor that won’t be happening given the tragic passing of fellow star Harold Ramis.

Who’s behind all of this?

Sony Pictures is behind the companion film and there are plans in place to expand Ghostbusters into a fully realized franchise and brand.

What else is happening with the franchise?

In addition to the 2016 reboot and the companion film, there is a blueprint in place for a production company called Ghostcorps. The production company will be headed up by Ghostbusters architects Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd. A primary goal of Ghostcorps will be to expand branding opportunities and franchise ideas that date back to the original film. Reitman is hoping to realize the full potential of the Ghostbusters brand.

According to Reitman:

My primary focus will be to build the Ghostbusters into the universe it always promised it might become. The original film is beloved, as is the cast, and we hope to create films we will continue to love.

Who’s involved with the new movie?

The new film is set to have a powerhouse crew, with the Russo Bros. looking to direct. Joe and Anthony Russo were also behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are in talks to potentially take the reigns of the Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon.

On the production side of things, Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan are hoping to produce and Tatum in particular is hoping to also head up the cast as one of the Ghostbusters.

What does this mean for the future of the Ghostbusters franchise?

Provided both films do well and the production company takes off, it means a potential slew of new Ghostbusters films, TV show opportunities, lots of merchandise and the expanded Ghostbusters universe that was always meant to be.
