Today we have an open discussion surrounding the etymology behind many genre names, whether they’re based on a particular sound, a geographical region, a state of musical refinement, an ideology, or the production process itself.


  


There’s a good chance that at some point in your life, you’ve wondered how a particular style of music got its name. Some like Country ot Pop(ular) music are a bit more obvious, but beyond this there are hundreds of lesser known sub-genres that in many cases have pretty bizarre names. Case in point, just a few of the dozens we mention in this episode are folktronica, shoegaze, jangle pop, crustgrind, plunderphonics and synthpunk.
