It’s not much of an update, but if you’re curious as to whether Guardians of the Galaxy 2 would get a subtitle or not, here’s our answer!
Earlier today, Marvel big cheese Kevin Feige let slip to Collider that, “We start shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 in February-March 2016.”
That’s the first time anyone from Marvel has referred to the movie as anything but Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which led many fans to believe that this may be the actual title. Just hours later, director James Gunn stepped in to clarify.
So what is the official title for Guardians 2?
According to Gunn, the film will in fact be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
This is in line with Marvel’s trend of not using numerical titles for their sequels (ie, Avengers 2, Captain America 2, etc), the big exception of course being the Iron Man trilogy.
Why “Volume 2”?
I’m going to assume that it’s a reference to Peter Quill’s “Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” the cassette tape he has in the original. At the end of that film, he finally opens a gift that his mother gave to him on her deathbed, which turns out to be “Awesome Mix. Vol. 2.”
And there we go.
Solid titling. When will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 be out?
The Guardians sequel is currently scheduled for May 5, 2017, as part of Marvel’s Phase Three.
