Doctor Strange: Marvel May Gender-Bend This Character for Tilda Swinton

Apparently, Tilda Swinton is in negotiations with Marvel Studios to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange. What’s most interesting about this development is that she’s being considered for the role of the Ancient One.

As many of you probably know, the Ancient One is a Tibetan mystic who spends time training potential candidates to become the next Sorcerer Supreme. In the comics, the Ancient One has always been a male character.

The studio was originally looking for a male to take on the role but has since changed their focus to Swinton. Obviously, they’ll adapt the role appropriately if Swinton is cast. This is definitely interesting, especially because of how skilled an actress Swinton is. If you haven’t had a chance to see her in Snowpiercer yet, get on that!

The Ancient One will be responsible for the rise of Doctor Strange — Cumberbatch’s character. When we first meet Strange, he’s a skilled surgeon devoid of any special powers or abilities. After he gets in a car accident that damages the nerves in his hands, Strange tries to find ways to heal himself but instead discovers the Ancient One and magic. That sets him on the path to becoming a superhero.
