These Were the Top 50 Highest Grossing Movies of 2014

2014 was not a great year for movie theaters (the worst year since 2011 as a matter of fact). Still, that didn’t stop some films from making some major bank at the box office. Want to guess how many movies Disney had in the top 10?

The answer is four, so nearly half, and that is more than a little insane considering they’re about to conquer 2015 as well with Star Wars and Avengers 2.

Here’s a few more interesting statistics:

• Guardians of the Galaxy beat out The Winter Soldier to be Marvel’s biggest movie this year.
• Eight movies on the top 50 were based on comic books.
• Only 15 of the top 50 were not sequels, adaptations, remakes, or spin-offs.
• Three movies from 2013 made the cut.
• The LEGO Movie was the top-grossing animated film, beating out both Disney and DreamWorks releases this year.
