Jeremy Renner is once again suiting up as Hawkeye, but with principle photography on Age of Ultron finished, what for?
The actor posted this cryptic message on his WhoSay profile:
Tues morn. I find myself in costume again. I just can’t tell you why. And it still fits! #marvel #avengers #hawkeye
So what could this mysterious Hawkeye project be? Here are four possibilities.
1. Age of Ultron Reshoots
The boring answer is that Avengers 2 needed reshoots for scenes that Renner’s character is a part of. While that’s certainly possible, it doesn’t really seem worth teasing about online, so let’s see what else it might be.
2. Agents of SHIELD
Considering how often he rolls with the Avengers, it’s easy to forget that Clint Barton is in fact an agent of SHIELD (a Level 7 no less). Plus, since he’s one of the lesser-utilized members of the Avengers cast, it’d certainly make more sense for him to show up in the TV show than say, Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans.
With the introduction of the Inhumans in Agents of SHIELD‘s midseason finale, the team is going to need all the help they can get when the show picks back up later this year. Throwing Hawkeye into the mix sounds like a great way to go.
And let’s not forget, Mockingbird had a big role on this season of SHIELD, and in the comics, she was once married to Hawkeye… Sounds like some good drama to me.
3. Marvel One-Shot
A lot of fans were upset that there was no Marvel One Shot on the Guardians of the Galaxy blu-ray. If you’re not familiar with that term, One-Shots are short films that Marvel often includes with their DVD releases.
They’ve gotten progressively more elaborate over time, with the previous two, Agent Carter and All Hail the King, setting up Marvel’s newest TV series and the true identity of The Mandarin respectively.
It seems very possible to me that there was no One-Shot on Guardians because Marvel’s plans for the next short needed more time. If Hawkeye is involved, that idea would make sense as Renner would have been busy filming Age of Ultron.
4. An Age of Ultron Stinger Scene
Marvel’s post-credits stinger scenes are pretty iconic, and they’re usually planned out way in advanced. That’s not a hard rule though, as the one in The Avengers (the shawarma scene) was actually shot a day after the film’s official premiere.
A similar situation might have occurred here, with Marvel attempting to hide what the stinger scene includes (by shooting it separately from the main production). Alternatively, something new may have occurred to the creatives at the studio, perhaps a way to tie it into Ant-Man, the film that will follow Age of Ultron, or even a new way to set up the upcoming Infinity War mega-event.
What do you guys think? I’m leaning towards a One-Shot, but until we know more, it’s really hard to say.
