Those of us who grew up in the 90s are pretty psyched.
So, if you hadn’t noticed after the waves of 70s and 80s nostalgia, the 90s are going to be front and center for the next few years. Nothing is a bigger indicator that this is going to be a thing than Nicktoons, the team up movie of all of Nickelodeon properties from the 90s. According to the Tracking Board, that’s exactly what’s happening.
[Update 11/23/15] We’ve updated the “What properties are we talking about here?” section with information about a Hey Arnold! movie in the works.
What is the title of the movie?
What properties are we talking about here?
Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, and Angry Beavers were the ones cited in the Tracking Board’s scoop. However, we wouldn’t be surprised to see The Wild Thornberries (who already had a team up film with the Rugrats crew), Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Doug, CatDog, Eureeka’s Castle, and SpongeBob SquarePants have cameos at the very least.
[Update 11/23/15] Variety is reporting that a TV movie of Hey Arnold!, which will act as a sequel to the original show. It’s very likely this will act as the first step toward establishing a Nicktoons film.
How could all these different worlds be interacting?
Well, who said it was different worlds? Apparently the film will take cues from The Lego Movie, Space Jam, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Wreck It Ralph, which all took shared world and multi-verse approaches to putting different franchises together.
So, expect for the film to have a single world that all the franchises exist in (and have supposedly existed in this entire time), or for each franchise to be its own universe that the characters will travel between.
So, if this is a team up movie who will be on the team?
Well, it’s pretty safe to say they will take the protagonists of the existing franchises and stick them together. So, expect the leads of the major franchises to come together. As a result, the team will probably be comprised of Tommy Pickles, Arnold, Rocko, Ren (or Stimpy), Eliza Thornberry, and one of the Angry Beavers.
We also wouldn’t be surprised if one of the monsters showed up. We’re hoping for Oblina, both because we need more girls on the team and because she was totally the best character on that show.
Who will be the villains?
It’s too early to know. But our first thought? Angelica from Rugrats will be their Loki.No one can match her evil brattiness.
What will be the story?
Well, just like the Avengers, you can’t bring together all these iconic characters without creating a threat that could possibly destroy their worlds.
Knowing 90s Nick, it’ll probably involve all the parents doing something really stupid. Our first guess is that Stu Pickles will invent something that finally “puts him on the map,” but will actually have horrific implications only our heroes can see. Angelica will no doubt take advantage of this.
After all… this wouldn’t be the first time Stu has created something sinister that kids literally had to brawl out of existence.
