Looks like third time is never the charm for the Enterprise’s structural integrity.
Well, the third film in the Star Trek reboot series is certainly going in a crazy direction, isn’t it? According to the trailer, the Enterprise is going to be destroyed pretty early, leaving our crew stranded on an alien world and up against a hostile force that clearly has some pretty dastardly plans. In case you missed it before we pick it apart, here’s the trailer:
Let’s take a look at it frame by frame and see what we can come up with.
The analysis:
The Beastie Boys’ song “Sabotage” starts playing here, actually in the film it seems, as Scotty (Simon Pegg) pokes his head carrying a bunch of equipment.
Here’s a shot of Kirk (Chris Pine) from another part of the film. You can tell because Scotty’s behind him wearing a jacket. Kirk’s hair in this film is a lot closer to his look in the original series:
Here’s Sulu (John Cho).
Uhura (Zoe Saldana).
Chekov (Anton Yelchin) and Spock (Zachary Quinto). Strange that Spock is wearing red in his jacket rather than blue, which should belong to an operations position. Did he take it off a dead officer?
So, the Enterprise apparently gets &*$%ed up pretty early in this movie if they’re willing to give it away in the trailer. Kirk says “we’ve got no ship,” and we can believe it seeing as how the nacelle is gone… among other things as we can see as Kirk blasts away in an escape pod:
It looks like they all land apart on this forested world. It seems Kirk and Scotty pair up, as do Spock and McCoy as well as Sulu and Uhura:
Is this more wreckage of the Enterprise or another vessel? We’re starting to think this planet is a trap of sorts that brings down any vessels that come close enough. Perhaps it’s sort of like the Bermuda Triangle in space?
Looks like Scotty has a rougher landing than most.
In what’s sure to be another classic Spock/McCoy moment, the two get cornered and Spock is somehow beamed away (perhaps they salvaged some tech from the Enterprise?), leaving poor old Bones on his own. We’re guessing he’ll be beamed away at the last second as he’s cursing up a storm.
Looks like Kirk got a hold of a gas powered bike and is using it to do a Fast and Furious style jump.
Here’s our mystery alien played by Sofia Boutella, clearly adept with her staff. She’s probably been on this planet for a while. If she allies with Kirk, then she’s either been stranded here for a while herself or switched sides from whatever group is bringing ships down.
Big explosion. Is that Kirk and Scotty being flung away from it?
We’re thinking this is a Federation planet. Looks like it’s being attacked by the same ships and/or creatures that brought down the Enterprise and were attacking our crew. Will this be the climactic third act battle or something else?
Looks like Sofia Boutella is fighting Idris Elba’s villain.
Kirk about to fire his phaser. Looks like this is on the Federation planet.
Kirk and Chekov aboard the Enterprise. Is this during or after its destruction? Our first thought is this is when they’re trying to escape while it’s being torn apart, but it could also be while trying going back to salvage parts. The more we think about it, the more we think it’s the latter.
Another part of the fight between Boutella and Elba’s characters.
Elba’s villain on the Enterprise, or the wreckage of the Enterprise. He looks like an entirely new species, kind of like a shark crossed with a Jem’Hadar:
Idris Elba is throwing Kirk across a room, telling him that “this is where the frontier pushes back.”
Boutella is showing Scotty something pretty shocking.
Some random alien.
Apparently the Enterprise crew is being rounded up. Perhaps as a work force? Boutella’s character seems to know why, at the very least.
Uhura, banging on a door. She’s probably calling out to someone. Sulu perhaps?
More Enterprise destruction porn.
Title card.
In what is definitely the climactic moment of an action sequence, Kirk is being transported away and reaches out to Boutella’s character just in time to take her with him. We have a feeling this comes right after the motorcycle jump seeing as how Kirk of moving through the air with goggles. So, it probably goes:
Boutella loses fight to Elba –>Kirk does motorcycle jump to the rescue –>Boutella does daring/potentially suicidal move for Kirk –> they beam out.
