There might be more to this stormtrooper than meets the eye.
For many months before the release of The Force Awakens, we were peppered with tons of images of Finn with Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber. This understandable led us to believe two things: that he had stolen the lightsaber from the First Order and that he was going to be the Jedi-in-waiting for the film.
That Jedi, of course, turned out to be Rey. However, we think there’s a ton of signs that Finn has the potential to be a Jedi in future installments of the trilogy. What signs are those, you may ask? Good question. We’re here to answer it.
*SPOILERS FOR THE FORCE AWAKENS*
Finn broke through his First Order indoctrination his first mission in the field
Now, we’re not discounting that it’s possible that someone fresh off the First Order indoctrination assembly line could overcome their programming. However, that’s a pretty tall order all things considered. If Finn was in fact Force sensitive, that could account for his ability to shake off his programming.
Also, you may have noticed that there were some stylistic flourishes during Finn’s perspective in the opening battle that gave a sense of a sudden expanding consciousnesses. While that could be his fear during the battle… that could very easily be his first experience feeling the Force.
Kylo Ren sensed him
Shortly after Finn’s first possible brush with the Force, Kylo Ren (a practiced user of the dark side) turns and lingers on him. Notice Ren wasn’t looking at Finn when he failed to shoot, but after the massacre had happened.
Then, when Finn and Poe made their escape in a TIE Fighter, Kylo Ren also instantly knows the trooper’s designation which leads us to believe that Kylo Ren definitely had that trooper on his mind.
Finn felt the destruction of the Hosnian system
Midway through the film, the First Order uses Starkiller Base to destroy the Hosnian System. While some people may have noticed the death raining in the sky, Finn actually felt it. That calls back to Obi-Wan Kenobi back in A New Hope, who felt the destruction of Alderaan on the Millennium Falcon .
What if he is Force sensitive? What then?
Unfortunately, Finn didn’t join Rey in the journey to meet Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. It’s more likely he and Poe will be fighting the First Order together in Episode VIII. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t learn things between episodes. For all we know he could join Rey to train between Episodes VIII and IX and the three of them will be a bad ass Jedi trio in the final act of the trilogy.
He could be trained between this and next episode for all we know. I got the impression that Rey wasn’t going there to train alone with Luke but to request that he return to aid all the galaxy. That’s why she just holds his lightsaber out to him, she’s asking him to take it up again, to return and train new jedi (her included of course).
