Are they adopting the Marvel formula completely?
Well, this is pretty unexpected guys. According to Schmoesknow, The Force Awakens is going to feature a post credits stinger that will tease Rogue One.
What’s a stinger?
You know those post credits scenes in Marvel movies teasing the next film to come out?
Yeah.
That’s it.
And the rumor is The Force Awakens will have one?
Indeed. For next year’s Rogue One.
Is that a good thing?
Maybe yes, maybe know. Star Wars is a very traditional franchise. They’re shot in a certain way, editing in a certain way, and have a certain feeling that really isn’t deviated from for the sake of narrative continuity. Obviously, the spin-off films are free to break off from that style, but for the numbered installments it’s very important they all feel cohesive.
The argument against it is that a stringer might break that tradition. Now, we aren’t necessarily opposed to a post credit teaser for a new Star Wars film. After all, the best advertisement for a new Star Wars movie is a current Star Wars movie. We do hope, however, it’s a very separate thing that isn’t forever tacked onto the credits of the film.
If you go back and watch a Marvel film on home release, they will still have their post credit scene. If the same happens with Star Wars… we’re kind hoping that won’t be the case. After all, by the time these movies be available to watch in your living room you’ll probably be able to catch Rogue One.
As for now, it’s all just a rumor. Still… don’t be surprised if it happens.
