During this years E3, which is quickly becoming one of the best ever, game creator Yu Suzuki announced that the infamously delayed last entry into his Shenmue series is alive. There’s just a catch, its fate solely depends on crowdfunding via Kickstarter.
Shen-mue? I’m sorry, I don’t listen to hip-hop…
For the uninitiated, the original Shenmue series was a Dreamcast exclusive and one of the very first open world games. The series abruptly ended with Shenmue 2 is 1999 with a cliffhanger ending. Fans have kept its memory alive, and 16 years later, it seems to have paid off.
Its on Kickstarter right? It’ll never make it…
Possibly to everyone’s surprise, or no one’s, Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter reached its initial goal of 2 million dollars within 2 days. The Kickstarter still has various strech goals to make, but the game itself is fully funded.
According to series creater Yu Suzuki via his Famitsu interview on the game, he hopes to maintain the “culture” of the game and is currently looking into Unreal Engine 4 for development.
The Shenmue 3 will follow the events of Shenmue 2, and is tentatively planned for release on PS4 and PC on 2017. You can examine the Kickstarter yourself here.
