A Captain Marvel movie was officially announced last fall, but considering it’s still over three years off, it’s no surprise that we still don’t know much about it.
We do know that it will be the Carol Danvers version of the character, and that it will be one of two films set in between Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2. Beyond that, it’s all speculation.
According to a new Latino-Review scoop though, Marvel may be further along in development than we previously thought.
According to Umberto Gonzalez, Marvel has not only already cast their Captain Marvel and are keeping it “top secret,” the character will also debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron later this year.
How likely is this really?
Latino-Review has a hit-or-miss record with these sorts of rumors, but they’re still a pretty reliable source compared to most sites out there. Additionally, we’ve heard from multiple sources that in older drafts of the Age of Ultron scripts, Captain Marvel (or at least Carol Danvers) does make an appearance, so it’s entirely possible that bit of the story survived.
Additionally, Marvel’s brain trust is reportedly blocking out the story of the standalone film, with the intentions of bringing on an established writer to pen the actual script.
Anything else rumor-y regarding the movie?
According to the same batch of rumors, comic writer Kelly Sue DeConnick was asking to write the script, although Gonzalez states that he doesn’t know if she got the gig or not. Additionally, Jim Starlin, a comic book writer and artist with over 40 years of history with Marvel, is on board as a consultant. Starlin is widely regarded as the writer who revitalized the Captain Marvel comic, and also fittingly wrote a number of stories involving Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.
When will we be seeing this movie?
Captain Marvel will be a Phase Three film, and is scheduled to be released on November 2, 2018.
