Twitch Plays Pokemon has become of the biggest events to ever hit the internet. But the internet is a big place, and not everyone knows what’s going on, or why everyone suddely considers a small spiral shell their new Lord. So for anyone lost, we offer a quick and easy primer for Twitch Plays Pokemon. Praise Helix.
The Great Helix Fossil- During the game, almost every item was tossed out. Key times like the Helix Fossil, however, could not be thrown away. As a result, it was often selected during battles and did nothing. It was soon theorized that the character Red was simply consulting with Helix Fossil, as it was his god. The Great Helix Fossil represents Anarchy and Freedom. Its agent on Earth is Pidgeot, or Bird Jesus.
The Dome Fossil- Since players can only choose one of the other, the Dome Fossil has come to be known as the enemy of Helix and all it stands for. Democracy, order, releasing Pokemon. It’s agent on Earth is Flareon, or the False Prophet.
Anarchy vs. Democracy- Around the six day, the chaos got to the point where the game was grinding to a halt. The emulator in charge decided to streamline the process of Pokemon Twitch by adding a Democracy mode. In this mode, the most popular command was inputted. This made the game easier to navigate, but also slower and less fun.
Start9- In response of Democracy mode, the Anarchists starting spanning “Start9,” a command that pause the game 9 times in a row. This acted as a sort of filibuster that, just like in real life, caused Democracy to faulter.
Battle of PC/Bloody Sunday- The darkest day of Pokemon Twitch. After capturing a Zapdos, the players tried to withdraw it from the PC. This resulted in an immense conflict resulting in the release of 12 pokemon.
Bird Jesus (Pidgeot): The first pokemon captured, and arguably the most important. It became the highest level pokemon and main hope of ever beating the game. For its efforts, it was titled Bird Jesus, Lord Helix’s chosen Messiah.
The False Prophet (Flareon): An Eevee that was caught on the 5th day, the second darkest day in Twitch Pokemon. When it evolved into Flareon, many saw it as the fulfilling of a dark prophecy. It was deemed an agent of the Dome Fossil.
Lord Omastar: Praise to be his name. Originally the Helix Fossil, many interpreted Red’s constant use of the useless key item as a religious experience. It is now seen by many as the guiding light of the playthrough.
Battery Jesus (Zapdos): Caught with the Master Ball, which was miraculously not tossed away. It was dubbed Judas for a long time due to its connection with the Battle of PC and Bloody Sunday. But it eventually redeemed itself during the Elite Four battles, and by defeated the last pokemon of the game.
AIR (Lapras): A pokemon that was foretold early in the game. Lapras’s capture was seen as a good sign and allowed the players to use Surf.
ATV (Venomoth): Also known as All-Terrain Venomoth, this little guy was captured in the Safari Zone. It is one of the few pokemon to survive the massacre of Bloody Sunday, and became a legend by slaying a Dragonite during an Elite Four battle.
DigRat (Ratatta): Lost during the massacre of Bloody Sunday. This Ratatta was actually hated for its use of Dig, which forced players to caves and certain levels. It later proved to be a worthwhile member of the team when it evolved into a Raticate.
ABBBBBBK( (Charmeleon): The first pokemon. The lost one. Also known as Abby, this fire starter was exiled due to the evil of the False Prophet Flareon.
Jay Leno (Rattata): The third pokemon to join the team. He too was lost when the Dark One rose.
Timeline: February 12th-March 1st, 2014 (17 days)
Day 1- The adventure begins with Charmander, also known as ABBBBBBK (, or Abby. Hours later, a Pidgey is captured. This little bird would soon become the playthrough’s only hope.
Day 2- Having made it passed the first gym, the team entered Mt. Moon, were it obtained the now venerated Helix Fossil. A Rattata was also caught and named JLVWNNOOOO, or Jay Leno. After getting passed the second gym, a second Rattata is caught. Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto.
Day 3- A Drowzee and Farfetch’d, or DUX, were obtained. DUX was taught Cut, as requirement to get passed certain parts of the game. The third gym is cleared with some difficulty.
Day 4- After about 16 hours, the team manage to get passed Route 9, also known as the dreaded LEDGE. The team tries to traverse the Rock Tunnel without Flash, leaving the level in complete darkness. To make matters worse, one of the Rattata is taught Dig, e.i. DigRat, which is used to return the players to the start of the cave. DigRat is deposited in the PC and the cave is cleared. Pidgeotto finally evolves into Pidgeot. Bird Jesus has arrived.
Day 5- The Dark Prophecy Began. The fourth gym is defeated. Many hope to get a pokemon capable of SURF. Some hope to keep the 6th slot empty for Lapras. Instead, an Eevee was obtained. To make matters worse, Charmander and Rattatta (Jay Leno) were released into the wild. DigRat rejoined the team in time to tackle the Team Rocket Hideout. An Oddish was caught. Eevee evolved into Flareon, becoming the subject of everyone’s frustration and being heralded as the False Prophet of the Dome Fossil.
Day 6- Due to getting stuck in the Team Rocket Hideout for about 18 hours, the emulator added the Democracy vs Anarchy system. Players could now choose the boring cooperation route, or more entertaining Chaos path. After some trouble, the evil Flareon was released into the wild and the Team Rocket Hideout was cleared.
Day 7- A Zubat and Hitmonlee were obtained and released. The team entered the ghost filled Pokemon Tower. No real progress, except for the capturing of a Ghastly.
Day 8- Pokemon Tower is slowly cleared. The Pokeflute is also obtained. Pidgeot becomes aaabaaajss (Bird Jesus). DigRat evolves into Raticate. The whole ordeal took 42 hours.
Day 9- The team arrives at Fuschia City, the home of the much dreaded Safari Zone. Perhaps because of fear, the Safari Zone is cleared relatively easily. Many pokemon were caught, most notably a Venomoth named AATTVVV, or All-Terrain Venomoth. The fifth gym is defeated and the HM Surf and Strength are obtained. Oddish Evolved into Gloom. Silpho Co. is entered, the game is temporarily delayed, and a Lapras is caught and named AIIIIIIRRR, or Air Jordan.
Day 10- Lapras is taught Surf and Strength. Silpho Co. is cleared and the Master Ball is obtained and surprisingly not tossed away. The 6th gym is cleared thanks to Pidgeot.
Day 11- The Battle of PC. The team decided to capture a Zapdos using the Master Ball. This forces them to return to Route 9 and its ledge from hell. For some odd reason, a campaign begins to release Pidgeot, also known as Bird Jesus. Zapdos is miraculously caught and sent to the PC. When the team attempts to retrieve it, all hell breaks loose. Pokemon are withdrawn and deposited with little rhyme or reason. Ultimately, 12 pokemon are released, including DUX and DigRat. Many blame Zapdos, or AA-j, dubbing it Judas and Anti-Jesus.
Day 12- The Second Coming. After the event known as “Bloody Sunday,” the team was now composed of Zapdos, Pidgeot, Lapras, Venomoth, Drowzee, and the last surviving Nidorino (The Fonz). Mt. Moon is revisited and Nidorino is evolved into a Nidoking. The team finally make it to Cinnabar Island were the Helix Fossil is restored into the Great Lord Omanyte.
Day 13- The 7th gym is cleared and the 8th gym is tackled.
Day 14- The 8th gym and its dreaded ledge of terror are cleared. So is the penultimate battle with the rival Blue. The day ends with a grinding session to level up the pokemon before heading into Victory Road.
Day 15- More grinding occurs. Victory Road is attempted once, and failed miserably. Even more grinding occurs. Then the incredible happened and Lord Omanyte evolved into Lord Omastar.
Day 16- Through the will of Lord Omastar, the team manage to get past Victory Road and enter the Pokemon League. The day is fraught with many back and forth battles that ultimately prove futile. One notable exception was Venomoth’s upset victory over Dragon Trainer Lance’s Lv. 65 Dragonite. A dragon slayer is born.
Day 17- No one saw it coming. Few believed it would even be possible. But on March 1st, 2014, after 17 days of pure insanity, Zapdos defeated Blastoise. Twitch Beats Pokemon Red.
And now you too know the legend. Praise Helix.
