Brad Pitt is coming back for a second helping. Here’s what we know about it.
World War Z was a pleasant surprise when it was released back in 2013. Sure, if you expecting something like the book it’s easy to see how you were let down… but the only way to truly do the book justice would be as an HBO mini-series. For a summer blockbuster… World War Z was a surprisingly smart and tense globetrotting thriller.
So, we’re pretty curious to see what they’re going to do with the sequel.
What’s the movie called?
At the moment, everyone’s just calling it World War Z 2… though we doubt they’ll keep that. It’ll probably look closer to something like World War Z: Insert Subtitle Here.
Who’s writing and directing?
J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) is directing. Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Locke) wrote the treatment and first drafts of the film, while British writer Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Black Sea) is working on the latest draft.
What happened at the end of World War Z?
Gerry (Brad Pitt), the protagonist from the first film, discovers that zombies don’t attack anyone who’s infected with a terminal illness, so they find a deadly but curable pathogen that allows humanity to fight back without the zombies attacking them.
Then Gerry reunites with his family in Nova Scotia.
What will the sequel be about?
We don’t know, but word on the street is they’re taking the story in a very different direction that doesn’t necessarily pick up where the action from the first film left off. As for what that direction could be… we’ll have to wait to hear more.
Will Brad Pitt be returning?
Yes. His production company, Plan B, is also producing this film like it did with the first.
Who’s in the cast?
For now, all we know is that Brad Pitt is returning. They’re still working on the screenplay so it’s a little early to be worrying about casting any other roles.
Anything else we should know?
They’ll probably mine more material from Max Brooks’ book, though we’re not entirely sure what yes. That depends on the story and approach they’re taking.
When will we know more?
Probably when the project is ready to go into production or when Brad Pitt goes on a press tour for his next project.
When will the film be out?
At the moment, the film is slotted to be released on June 9th, 2017. However, it’s very possible that it’ll be pushed back depending on how long development takes.
