The next Call of Duty has been confirmed, it’s Black Ops 3. It’s being developed by Treyarch the team responsible for the other two Black Ops titles, World at War, Modern Warfare 3 and Ghosts.
How Do We Know It’s Black Ops 3?
On Monday April 6, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 received an update that didn’t include any significant changes. This suggested that there was some kind of ulterior motive behind the update, perhaps related to an easter egg.
Sure enough, fans discovered the Snapchat ghost in-game which is similar to a QR code. You can see what that ghost looked like and where it’s located in the video above.
Scanning the ghost would connect fans to the official Call of Duty Snapchat account. After viewing the account fans were able to watch the first video teaser, this one ten seconds in length and in black and white.

As you can see in the teaser, a familiar voice says, “Listen only to the sound of my voice.” Many fans took this teaser to mean we’d be playing through another World War 2 torn environment, and that we might be taking control of Mason’s relative — the star of the previous Black Ops games.
It turns out that may not be the case at all, we may actually be jumping into the distant future instead. Some of the more recent clues point to a futuristic, cyber-punk like theme.
Why Will Black Ops 3 Take Place?
If you take a peek at the latest official teaser, you’ll see some clues that indicate where Black Ops 3 will likely take place. Aside from all the familiar voices in the background, there are some other hidden clues that fans can follow.
All of the letters and numbers you see on the screen appear to be taking the shape of objects and people, diverting your attention. If you look more closely, however you’ll notice location coordinates are being displayed.
The first set of legible coordinates we see are +1.300, +103.8000. Plugging these into Google Maps takes us to a school in Singapore.
A second set of coordinates appears on screen at 00:07, which are +30.0500, +31.2333. Plugging these into Maps takes us to North Africa, or more specifically the 6 October Bridge, Qasr an Nile, Cairo Governorate, Egypt.
At 00:24 a third set of coordinates appears on the body of the weapon. They are +47.3667, +8.5500. Plugging those in, we’re taken to Northern Switzerland and another bridge in Zurich.
Finally, we see the date April 26 — the world reveal for the new Call of Duty. Just before that we see the numbers and letters take the shape of the iconic soldier on the cover of Black Ops, lending credence to the claim that the next game is indeed Black Ops 3.
At this point a lot of the information is based on speculation, so it’s entirely possible the world reveal may show themes and ideas different than we discuss here. That said, the next Call of Duty game is most definitely Black Ops 3.
What Else Do We Know?
Apparently, resourceful fans were able to crawl the source code of the official Call of Duty website to find out more. They discovered a small blurb that reveals more details about the next game’s plot, in addition to the image above.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the first title for next-gen hardware in the critically acclaimed Black Ops series. Developed by Treyarch, the award-winning creator of the two most-played games in Call of Duty history. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 deploys players into a dark, twisted future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the technology we created to stay ahead, in a world where cutting-edge military robotics define warfare. With three unique game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies, providing fans with the deepest and most ambitious Call of Duty ever.”
That’s some great detective work there, but it gets better. It turns out that players will be able to link their Xbox Live, Playstation Network, Steam and Nintendo Network ID accounts through the official site. Yes, you read that last option correctly. It seems that Black Ops 3 will be available on all “next-gen” systems including Nintendo’s!
Finally, zombie mode is making a comeback. Obviously, the leaked description talks about the three game modes including Zombies, but there are easter eggs in the teaser too.
- The number ‘115’ appears several times on the screen, which is a tie-in to Element 115 from the original Black Ops game. It was the element used to reanimate the dead, which had a nasty side effect of turning them into flesh mongering zombies.
- At 00:34 a “Trident” icon appears on the screen and floats between the letters Z,M,B,I,E, and S.
What, So What Happened?
That sure is a lot to take in all at once, so we’ve thrown together a list of all the important things we know about the next Call of Duty title.
- The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops 3
- It has ties to Mason, the main character from the previous Black Ops games
- It will take place sometime in the future
- Locations in the game may include Singapore, North Africa (Egypt), and Northern Switzerland (Zurich)
- April 26 is the official world reveal for the new game
- Zombie mode will return
- The game is coming to all “next-gen” consoles including the Nintendo Wii-U
