Valve co-founder Gabe Newell may not know how to count to three, but he certainly isn’t letting that stop him from dominating the gaming landscape. “Gaben,” as he is affectionately known, has landed a starring role in an upcoming indie title that will see him wielding a giant knife; as if he wasn’t intimidating already.
What are you talking about?
Indie developer Powerhoof, creators of the Early Access dungeon crawler title Crawl, has announced that Gabe Newell will appear in their game as a knife-wielding villain ready to end the player’s journey in swift fashion.
The process of getting Gaben to appear in the game started with Powerhoof posting an animated version of the iconic developer on his blog. The animation then received a mobile version, showing Newell launching around the game screen, swinging his knife mercilessly.
Artist Barny Cumming noted his excitement for the possibility, stating “I’ve wanted to animate this for ages…This has been at the top of my list since the very start.”
What did Gabe say?
Gaben and Valve were immediately attracted by the idea and gave Powerhoof official permission to use the developer’s likeness in the game.
Powerhoof stated that it received a “short, sweet email from Valve today giving the go ahead for this silly thing. Turns out Valve are cool. Who knew?”
If only Gabe and his Valve co-horts were as amenable to the idea of Half-Life 3.
Gaben will be added in the game’s next update, which will be arriving “very soon.” Crawl is currently in Early Access on Steam and available for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.
