James Gunn took to Facebook today to reveal that the first draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 screenplay has been completed.
It reportedly took him 48 straight days (without a single day off) to complete it, so I imagine he’s taking a much needed break while execs at Marvel look it over.
What else do we know about it?
Well, we know that all of the main cast will be back, including Josh Brolin as Thanos. We also know it will introduce Peter Quill’s father, and it won’t be the same dad as the comic book version. Aside from that though, we’re really just speculating.
Gunn did reveal that his draft isn’t focused on MCU interconnectivity. While he has a general idea of where things are going (who doesn’t by now?), he said his focus was on crafting a worthy followup to the first Guardians.
“I told Marvel what I wanted to do, and they said okay. They gave me nothing,” he wrote. “That said, I already know where things are basically going. But the important thing to me is GotG2 only right now – making it a great movie.”
When is it out?
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is aiming for a May 5, 2017 release date, so expect it to head into production sometime next year.
