If you’re anything like us, you’re chomping at the bit waiting for Mad Max: Fury Road to hit theaters. The trailers and hype for the film have been fantastic but it’s still a little ways away from its triumphant theatrical release, so we decided to gather everything we know about the film in one place for your convenience.
What’s the movie about?
Mad Max: Fury Road is an apocalyptic tale set in a desert wasteland devoid of humanity on the farthest outskirts of our planet.
Amidst the chaos of people warring with one another over basic necessities, there are two rebels who may be able to restore order. One of these rebels is Max, the titular protagonist, a man of much action and asskickery and few words who is in search of peace of mind after losing his beloved wife and son to the madness surrounding him.
The other is Furiosa, a hard-nosed woman who isn’t afraid to take chances who believes her best chance of survival is to make it across the desert and back to her homeland.
Is this a reboot or a sequel to the original trilogy?
It’s a reboot. At an April 30, 2014 screen test of the film, director George Miller told the people in attendance that the reason for the reboot is that too much time had passed since the last Mad Max film and trying to do a sequel now would cause a slew of continuity errors and plotholes.
George also has no interest in doing a remake, as he doesn’t want to re-tell a story that people have already heard. By rebooting the franchise, it allows him to bring the universe and story 30 years up to date while keeping Max just as fans remember him; a badass with nothing to lose after the loss of his family.
Who’s heading up the cast/crew of the film?
Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy as the titular Max Rockatansky, Nicholas Hoult as Nux and Charlize Theron as Furiosa.
Heading up the crew is the man himself, Director George Miller, who also co-wrote the movie alongside Brendan McCarthy, who is known for his work on the 1990’s films Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Lost in Space.
Is this a one-off thing or are there sequels planned?
There are sequels in the works! Just last month, Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy confirmed that he has signed a contract to be attached to the character Max for an additional three films after Fury Road. The next film in the series is rumored to be titled Mad Max: Furiosa.
Back in 2011, George Miller stated in an interview that the script for Furiosa is finished and that a script for the third movie is nearly complete as well.
When can I catch Mad Max: Fury Road in theaters?
Mad Max: Fury Road hits theaters everywhere May 15, 2015.
