The new trailer for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation just dropped and it’s full of the same high-octane action from the previous one. Both end with Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt hanging from the side of a plane that’s taking off. If you can believe it, he did that stunt for real.
Anyway, now that the trailer is live let’s take a closer look. If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a watch then head past the break.
What’s New in This Trailer?
I’m not going to pick apart every frame of this trailer, Ryan was pretty thorough when he analyzed the first one. Instead, I’m just going to point out some of the new scenes and details we see here.
Most of what we see is a rehash of scenes from the first trailer though some of them are longer this time around. For instance, we get to see more of the car and motorcycle chase, as well as Ethan’s dive into that water vault or reactor.
Apparently, Agent Hunt has to make it through “twelve feet of concrete, and 70,000 gallons of pressurized water without any metal.” The no metal part means he can’t use oxygen tanks or diving gear once he’s inside the vault.
We also hear Simon Pegg’s character Benji Dunn, telling Ethan that if he doesn’t open a hatch in two and a half minutes they’re both dead — presumably “both” being Agent Hunt and Dunn.
Whatever the team is up to, it doesn’t appear to end well because we hear Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, yelling “abort” several times before Ethan is struck by a mechanical arm and carried offscreen.
It’s unclear whether or not this event is the reason why the government wants “to dissolve the IMF,” or if it’s just a later scene in the movie.
Next, we see a longer version of the car chase with Agents Dunn and Hunt. It looks like they’re running from the Syndicate.
Agent Hunt also has a battle with them on bikes. The scene is reminiscent of Mission Impossible II where Hunt spent a lot of time riding around on motorcycles. Let’s hope Rogue Nation isn’t nominated for any Golden Raspberries.
We get a quick glimpse at Sean Harris, who’s character we don’t know yet. He’s likely working with the Syndicate and is an agent after Hunt’s IMF team.
From what I can gather there’s a heist, kidnapping scene, several high-speed chases, an opera or show and a plane hijacking.
Whatever is going on, it looks to be pretty exciting.
Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames are reprising their roles from previous films. Newcomers include Alec Baldwin as head of the CIA, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa an IMF ally, Sean Harris, Simon McBurney, and Zhang Jinchu.
Rogue Nation releases on July 30, 2015.
