Not really surprising but incredibly disappointing nonetheless. I first saw it via Rolling Stone. I remember getting a weird feeling about the band cancelling their appearance at this years Cropped Out Festival in Louisville. Mark E was a legend and the annoying old bastard inspired everyone that matters and released 32 unlistenable masterpieces of shattered punk rock in his lifetime. Every once in a while we mention “the man” in this column (i.e. Mark Lanegan) but Smith was the embodiment of that idea. No one could fuck with him. Godammn there better be ale in heaven.
