Star Wars Rumor: Are Lucasfilm and Disney Considering an Obi-Wan Kenobi Trilogy?

The Prequel Trilogy may have had its problems, but Ewan McGregor wasn’t one of them by a long shot. His portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi was suave, charming, wise, and anchored a very mixed in the midst of some tough working conditions. Therefore, one of the biggest requests bouncing around the internet is for a series of anthology films focusing on Obi-Wan during his years in exile. According to Schmoesknow, that very well may happen.

How did they come upon this rumor/conclusion?

According to them, Ewan McGregor is in negotiations for a project at Disney… and that project stars a certain exiled Jedi Master.

Kenobi

How likely is this rumor?

Well, it’s been doing the rounds on the internet for quite a while now. Many sites have reported that Lucasfilm has been looking into the possibility of an Obi-Wan standalone film, but a trilogy of films is quite a commitment that shows a lot of faith on Disney’s part.

Still, McGregor has publicly spoken about his affection for the role and his willingness to return to it. As we also stated before, his performance as Kenobi is one of the universally liked parts of the Prequel Trilogy. And, last but not least, McGregor is the perfect age to be doing these films if they take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

Will he show up in Rogue One?

Extremely doubtful. That film has been billed as Jedi-less for a while now.

So… how would they do an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film?

Well, given where Obi-Wan Kenobi is during that time period the most sensible approach would be to make it a Western. In fact, the Legends novel Kenobi is essentially a remake of Shane. Also, an anthology comic series released around 2005 depicted Darth Maul hunting down Kenobi as he watched over Luke. Maul’s character design for his return in Clone Wars was inspired heavily by his look in the comic.

ObivMaul2

The thought of an older Obi-Wan trying to find a new life as Ben only for his past (Maul) to catch up with him is very compelling in a John Wayne way. The movie could end with an old school duel at dawn between the two old foes to settle their grudge once and for all.

When will we know more?

It’s hard to say. If the rumors are true, they could announce something the minute they’ve locked McGregor down. They could also be waiting for a more opportune time to take advantage of another event, such as the release of The Force Awakens. Hopefully the rumor is true, as it has the potential to be amazing.
