Call of Duty has been a massively successful franchise since it debuted in 2003.
Just how successful though? How about a game sold every two minutes for over a decade. That’s over 175 million copies, and over $11 billion in total lifetime revenue. Mind. Blown.
The figure was revealed via an official infographic advertising the Call of Duty Championship, the biggest console esports tournament of the year, taking place this weekend.
Just how many Call of Duty games are there?
To date, there have been 12 major installments of the series, not including the handheld and mobile spin-offs, or the expansion packs. Averaged out, that means Activision is making just under a billion dollars a year off of this franchise. And people wonder why they keep pumping out Call of Duty games.
Which game made the most money?
While Activision tends not to release official sales figures, to our knowledge, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 2011 is still the series most successful game, clocking in somewhere around 26.5 million copies sold.
What’s next for Call of Duty?
A currently unannounced entry is being developed by Black Ops creator Treyarch right now, and will almost certainly be released in November. Expect it to, once again, make all the money.
