It’s been 12 long years since we last saw Captain Harlock and his deathshadow ship, and over three decades since the original manga debuted in the 1970s. Basically, it’s about time Harlock made a comeback, is what I’m trying to say.
Well we won’t have to wait long, as Harlock: Space Pirate, a new CG animated film, will be released stateside later this month.
Briefly:
- Harlock: Space Pirate, an animated feature based on the original manga/TV series, will hit VOD and DVD at the end of the month.
- It is just under two hours long, and features both the original Japanese release, and an English language voice track.
- You can pre-order it here.
Wait, there’s more Captain Harlock? How did I not hear about this?
Don’t blame yourself. The movie has been out for a year and a half now, but if you don’t live in Japan, you probably didn’t get a chance to see it. It was only screened a few times outside of that country, and mostly at film festivals. This DVD release will be the first time that most of us will have a chance to check it out.
Tell me more about this movie.
Harlock: Space Pirate is a CG animated feature directed by Shinji Aramaki, one of the major creative forces behind Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Halo Legends, Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina, and Starship Troopers: Invasion.
As far as the story goes, there’s not a lot I can reveal without spoiling some big plot details, beyond the fact that it’s a semi-reboot of the Captain Harlock mythos. Let’s just say… dark matter, time travel, spaceships with skulls on them, intergalactic fascism, and a really, really big laser; and leave it at that.
Subs or dubs?
Both! The DVD contains the original Japanese language track, as well as a dub featuring David Matranga (Appleseed, Journey to Agatha), Emily Neves (Starship Troopers: Invasion, Journey to Agatha), and Rob Mungle (Blue Seed, Lady Death).
Score! When is it out?
Harlock: Space Pirate will be released on March 31, 2015. You can pre-order it here.
Welcome back Captain Harlock.
Welcome back indeed!
