Marvel and Sony simultaneously shook the film industry and caused unfathomable rejoicing at the news Spider-Man would come to the Marvel cinematic universe. Marvel itself shifted their own Phase 3 plans around to accommodate the film, currently scheduled to hit July 2017.
With a new direction for Spider-Man comes a new actor. Rumor has it Marvel is looking for a Peter Parker in a younger age range, which makes complete sense as they want an actor with longevity for the franchise. By the time you’re making the third movie, it would be difficult to pretend a 30+ year old actor is a 19 year old. Thus, we have the newest rumored contenders for the part courtesy of The Wrap.
Who are they?
Nat Wolff
While a little higher on the age spectrum at 20, Nat is probably best known for his turn as Isaac in The Fault in Our Stars.
Asa Butterfield
Asa, at 18, is just the right age they’re looking for as he isn’t too young for the unions to make filming a living hell (there are very understandable rules about how long a minor is allowed to work on a set at a time) for the production. He’s best known for his strong performances in the lead roles of Hugo and Ender’s Game.
Tom Holland
Also 18, Tom hasn’t had as many high profile roles as the last two actors, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less capable. The most well known movie he’s been in was 2012’s The Impossible, though he does have a part in an upcoming Ron Howard film, In the Heart of the Sea.
Timothee Chalamet
At around 20, Timothee has had a lot of work, most notably Interstellar and Homeland.
Liam James
Another 18 year old, Liam has been a part of some very high profile projects, giving him a great deal of experience. He has had regular appearances on Psych and The Killing and also appeared on The Way Way Back. A very experienced actor for his age.
When will we hear who has the part?
Marvel needs to make a decision soon, as the new Spider-Man is expected to debut in Captain America: Civil War, which has already begun production if they stuck to their reported April 1st shoot date. According to The Wrap, Sony will be offering screen tests to the actors next week with a decision made within the next 2-3 weeks. It should also be stressed that these five actors are not the only names in contention, simply the only ones we know about.
As for who will direct the film, rumors point to former Sinister Six director and Daredevil executive producer Drew Goddard, which many see as a cause for celebration.
Stay tuned and check back often. We should have our new Spider-Man soon.
