Kate Beckinsale Returns for Underworld 5, but What About the TV Series?

News broke recently that Kate Beckinsale would be returning for another Underworld movie. In addition, it was announced that Anna Foerster will be directing, making her the first woman to direct a film in the franchise.

Theo James — who played a small role in Underworld: Awakening — will also be returning for the fifth film. When Theo first appeared in Awakening, he played a vampire named David who allied with Selene (Beckinsale’s character) to help her track down her daughter and take on Michael Corvin (played by Scott Speedman).

Underworld 5 is set to start filming in Prague, sometime this October.

This is certainly interesting news, especially when you consider that back in October we heard Len Wiseman (writer and director of the series) say the franchise might make the leap to small screens.

Will Underworld Be Coming to TV?

At New York Comic Con last year, Len Wiseman said two new films would be coming, one of them called Underworld: Next Generation starring Theo James. He also claimed a TV series is on the way.

He said the following to IGN during an interview:

“There’s a few things being developed right now. There’s some characters we really liked – there’s kind of more of a spin-off of some of the characters like we did with ‘Rise of the Lycans’ and another film is being developed in the works with Kate possibly as well. And then there’s a television series as well. It’s kind of expanding that universe in many ways.”

His claims line up with the recent announcement. We know for sure now that a new movie is on the way and it will be starring both Kate Beckinsale and Theo James.

If there are two movies, only one has been accounted for. A spinoff might still be coming. Then there’s also the potential TV series.

What would a series even be about?

If Underworld 5’s title is Next Generation, it suggests that a new group of characters might be introduced in the vampire-lycan war. Those characters could become the focus of the sixth movie, or they could go forward to lead the TV series.

At this point, we don’t know if Kate Beckinsale will be attached to the TV adaption, but it’s reasonable to assume she might have a small role or cameo.

Are you ready to see more Underworld?
