If you’re looking to expand your movie collection this month, you’re in luck, because a bunch of great stuff is being released all at once, including a number of Academy Award winners and nominees.
Here are our top 5 picks for what you should be adding to your movie shelf in March.
1. Interstellar
Release Date: March 31
Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine star in Christopher Nolan’s latest epic. The film follows a team of astronauts who must travel beyond our galaxy in search of a way to save humanity from extinction.
It recently won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and it deserved it. Interstellar might just feature the best cinematic space-porn since… maybe ever, so pick this one up for the incredible visuals, and of course, Nolan’s evocative style of storytelling.
2. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
Release Date: March 24
The Hobbit trilogy (and quite possibly the entire Lord of the Rings saga) comes to an end with The Battle of Five Armies.
The final installment features the epic confrontation with the dragon Smaug, as well as the titular climactic battle of five armies. Pick this one up if you’d like to finally own the entire collection, or you’re hoping to schedule a 24 hour Lord of the Rings marathon.
3. Into the Woods
Release Date: March 24
This Disney musical from the director of Chicago adapts a Tony Award-winning Broadway production. The massive ensemble cast includes Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, and Emily Blunt, just to name a few.
The story is inspired by a mish-mash of fairy tales including Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood, and the film was recently nominated for three Academy Awards.
Pick this one up if you’re a die-hard Disney lover, or just a fan of good musicals in general.
4. The Imitation Game
Release Date: March 31
Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this drama about Alan Turing, a real-life British cryptanalyst who helped solve the “uncrackable” Enigma code during WWII.
The film picked up eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and a Best Actor for Cumberbatch. It also won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Pick this one up if you’re looking for an intense drama, or you just can’t get enough of Mr. Cumberbatch.
5. Song of the Sea
Release Date: March 17
Song of the Sea was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature this year, which surprised a lot of people considering The LEGO Movie didn’t make the cut. It shouldn’t have been that big of a shock though, as the studio’s previous movie, The Secret of Kells, was also a surprise Oscar nominee in 2009.
The film is based on an ancient Celtic myth of the selkie, creatures who live as humans on land, and as seals underwater. This animation team is known for their stunning visual style, and Song of the Sea doesn’t disappoint. Pick this one up if you’re a big fan of animation, or you’re looking for something fresh to watch with your family.
