Fashion geeks unite!
If you have an interest in fashion design now might be your chance to earn time in the spotlight. At last year’s Comic-Con, Her Universe and Hot Topic sponsored a unique “Geek Couture” fashion show — complete with a runway and everything — that showed off some of the hottest geek styles around. It looks like they’re at it again, as the show will coincide with this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
What Is the “Geek Couture” Show?
Billed as “the ultimate runway for fangirl fashion,” the event is aimed at fashion and design oriented geeks. It was originally created by Ashley Eckstein, the founder of Her Universe.
The upcoming show will be held on July 9th, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego.
Geeks, fans and amateur designers alike are encouraged by Hot Topic and Her Universe to submit outfit designs with a theme centered around geek culture. That means, anything encountered at Comic-Con and featured in popular culture is fair game. Anyone, male or female, may enter. However, to submit a design you will need to be at least 18. If you’re interested, you can submit your unique fashions at the official submissions page.
You have until April 22nd, 2015 to enter so get working on those designs if you haven’t already perfected them! A total of 25 contestants will be chosen, and they will be announced on April 28th, 2015.
During the event, two winners will be crowned — one by a panel of judges and the other by an audience vote.
All designs must be fashions — not costumes — and can be “geek couture” or ready-to-wear outfits. Contestants (designers) can wear their outfits on stage or they can use their own model for the runway. If you’d like to see the full set of rules for the 2015 event, you can find those on the submission page (above).
Entry to the event is first come first serve, and admission is free so long as you have a San Diego Comic-Con 2015 badge.
What Happened At Last Years Show?
The two winning contestants, Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine showed off their handmade outfits at the show — which quickly became fan favorites. Their designs were adapted into the Marvel Avengers Collection and will be available for purchase at Hot Topic come this May.
The show itself was covered by media outlets such as TIME, MTV, Hollywood Reporter, Cosmopolitan, Nylon and PopSugar. The Her Universe PR team estimates a social media reach of about 31 million.
Why do you care about that last part? Because, if you opt to be a part of this years show and have a design featured you’ll surely earn your fifteen minutes of fame, and then some.
