The Lego Movie is getting a full-fledged sequel in 2018, but in the meantime, you can see what Emmet, Wyldstyle, and the gang are up to in an attraction at the Legoland theme parks.
The movie/ride is called The Lego Movie 4D: A New Adventure, and was co-written and directed by Rob Schrab, who will also direct the feature-length Lego Movie sequel.
What’s it about?
A New Adventure is cranking up the meta angle even further. It follows Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty, Benny, and MetalBeard after they receive a mysterious invitation to visit a theme park. Things get… weird though when it turns out that all of the rides are based on the characters’ adventures in The Lego Movie, and our heroes soon uncover another evil plot.
Patton Oswalt will play a new villain named Risky Business, while Elizabeth Banks, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, and Charlie Day have all been confirmed to reprise their roles for the ride. Although strangely enough, there’s no mention of Chris Pratt announcement.
Do we know anything about the ride elements?
From the sound of it, A New Adventure will be in line with other “4D” theme park attractions, featuring a 3D movie accompanied by wind, smoke, water, and lighting effects.
There’s no mention of any motion simulator tech, such as the kind used for rides like Despicable Me at Universal, so I’m guessing that’s not an aspect of this ride.
When and where can I see it?
The attraction will be coming to Legoland Florida first on January 29, 2016, followed by Legoland California on February 6. It will reach the remaining four Legoland parks worldwide “soon afterwards,” and the 11 Legoland Discovery Centers in the US, Asia, and Europe over the course of 2016.
We’ve still got a big wait ahead of us before the actual sequel, but this will be a nice teaser for the burgeoning Lego Cinematic Universe (that’s something I never thought I’d ever be typing), with Ninjago in 2016, Lego Batman in 2017, and The Lego Movie 2 in 2018.
