One Year to Go until Batman V. Superman: Everything We Know So Far

We are exactly one year away from Batman V. Superman, the movie that will likely decide if DC and Warner Bros. have any chance at all of competing with the Marvel-Disney juggernaut.

In a matter of months we’ll be entering the film’s promotional phase, and we’ll finally get our hands on some footage to analyze and dissect. While we wait though, here’s what we know so far.

Who’s in it?

A looooot of DC characters:

Henry Cavill will return to reprise his role as Superman.

Ben Affleck has been cast as the other half of that title, portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman. We’ve been told that his version of the character is a much older, grizzled version than previous movie incarnations. Expect some heavy inspirations from The Dark Knight Returns.

Gal Gadot will play Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, an Amazon princess and warrior (and apparently the literal daughter of the god Zeus, no idea how that’s going to work).

Jason Momoa will play Arthur Curry/Aquaman, probably in a small, small cameo.

Ray Fisher will be Victor Stone/Cyborg, also in a small cameo role.

Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor, a business mogul with a mysterious agenda.

Tao Okamoto will be Mercy Graves, Luthor’s assistant.

Jeremy Irons will be the new Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler and mentor.

Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne will return as Daily Planet employees Lois Lane and Perry White respectively.

Also returning are Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive mom, and Christina Wren as Major Carrie Farris.

Finally, Scoot McNairy, Callan Mulvey, Jena Malone, and Holly Hunter have all been cast in unannounced roles.

Who’s directing and writing it?

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is taking the reigns on this one, with a script by Chris Terrio. David Goyer, writer of the Dark Knight trilogy, has a story credit on the screenplay.

What is it about?

We actually don’t know much about the plot. There are a ton of rumors floating out there, but so far, all we know for sure is that Batman and Superman will throw down at some point. If previous drafts of the script are any indication, this will be Lex Luthor’s doing some how.

Will it be split into two movies?

Earlier this year, a rumor emerged that Batman V. Superman had been split into two films, one called Enter the Knight, and the other Dawn of Justice.

This idea has been officially debunked though. There will only be the one movie, Dawn of Justice, in 2016.

When is it coming out?

Principle photography on the film wrapped up late last year, with a planned release date of March 25, 2016.

What’s next for the DC movie universe?

Following Batman V. Superman next year, we’ll be getting a Suicide Squad movie just months later in August.

Then, a standalone Wonder Woman movie will be released in June 2017, followed by Justice League Part One in November. Next, Flash and Aquaman movies in 2018, a Shazam movie in April 2019, and Justice League Part Two in June 2019.

Finally (assuming this all hasn’t fallen apart by then), Cyborg and Green Lantern in 2020. Hopefully that will be enough time for everyone to have forgotten about the one that starred Ryan Reynolds.
