Who’s in Star Wars: Rogue One So Far?

While all eyes are falling on the leads of The Force Awakens, steam is picking up on Rogue One, Lucasfilm’s gritty war following a Rebel Cell tasked with stealing the Death Star plans. While we don’t know much, we know that Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is shooting to make the film a tonal love child of Star Wars and Zero Dark Thirty.

So, who else is involved with the film crew?

Other people of note we know that are associated with the production are cinematographer Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty), production designer Doug Chaing (a concept artist for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones), Oscar winning special effects supervisor Neil Corbould (Saving Private Ryan, Gravity) and creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan, who certainly proved his worth with his work for Prometheus.

Lastly, Oscar winning film composer Alexandre Desplat (Zero Dark Thirty, The Imitation Game)  will be providing the original score. This won’t be the first time Desplat will have built on John Williams themes, having worked on the final two installments of the Harry Potter franchise.

Do we know who’s starring in the film?

Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) reportedly dropped everything (she’s a massive Star Wars fan) to play the lead. We aren’t sure of her role yet, but we do know she is a Rebel soldier who will most likely be in charge of a rag-tag team tasked with stealing the Death Star plans.

Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises) is also set for the film and is rumored for a villain role. An Imperial officer, perhaps? He certainly has the look.

Recently, major news outlets have reported a few new names who may be joining the cast. First is Sam Claflin, best known as Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games films. Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) is also reportedly in talks for the male lead of the film, though we have little idea regarding the details of the role.

Could anyone be playing a Jedi?

Nope, this is a Jedi-less film. The movie is centered around real people tasked with saving the galaxy without the help of people with powers. The loss of the Jedi Order will reportedly be very felt in the film, but only in that their absence has the rest of the galaxy picking up the slack of fighting for freedom and justice. As such, it will be the first Star Wars film without a Jedi in it.

Where can I find more details about the film?

We have a piece breaking down all the info we received at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. However, expect more casting announcements in the coming days as the film gets closer to production.

When is it coming out?

December 16th, 2016.
