There was a Game of Thrones panel at Comic-Con, but given that the previous season only ended a month ago, there wasn’t a lot of hard news on the upcoming episodes. That being said, we do know one thing about Season 6 for sure: Brandon Stark is coming back.
Bran had been absent for all of Season 5, but actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright confirmed to the Irish Examiner that his character would indeed be returning in the next season.
“I can’t say a lot but I am back this season, and it’s going to get particularly interesting with Bran,” he said, adding, “he has some interesting visions.”
Where did we last see Bran?
The last time we saw Bran, he had finally reached the weirwood tree from his vision. There he meets the Children of the Forest, as well as the Three-eyed Raven himself, who turns out to be an old man whose body has been fused with the roots of the tree.
That’s a hell of a note to leave us on, and Bran’s absence in Season 5 was definitely felt.
Why did Bran sit Season 5 out?
Likely because the fourth season of Game of Thrones nearly caught up to Bran’s story in the novels. In A Dance with Dragons, the most recent installment in the book series, Bran reaches the weirwood tree, and begins to learn how to control his greenseeing. He sees sees a number of visions, including ancient Stark kings, and… well, that’s pretty much it.
Like a lot of Season 5, it sounds like the sixth season will be heading in its own original direction. The showrunners on the HBO series have stated before that both the show and the books are heading to the same general ending, but after running out of George R.R. Martin’s books to adapt, the route there is getting more and more different.
So unless Martin pulls off a miracle and can get the next A Song of Ice and Fire book out before next spring, we’ll likely be getting a pretty different version of Bran’s story. Either way though, expect a ton of visions.
